OK ... there's more of these than I thought (prolific little bugger!) ... apparently, this editor has single-handedly populated Category:Cuban contemporary artists, since they all seem to have the same introduction ... I'm using the Warn-bio protocol and tracking them while I do cleanups and try to assist the editor, who apparently speaks English as a second language ... here's the stencil I'm using:

[edit] Requests for assistance

I posted the following on several other editors' talk pages ...

Hello, Cuban contemporary artists ... since you participated in this CfD, I wonder if you would care to comment on this posting at WP:COI/N regarding the plethora of unsourced articles created by ArleArt (talk · contribs) to populate this category that they created ... [edit] Update

Some Other Editor has located 147 pages on en.wiki created by ArleArt (talk · contribs) with the same linkspam to www.cubancontemporaryart.com/ ... this has also been brought to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard. —72.75.72.63 (talk) 18:53, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

I notice that the external link spam to cubancontemporaryart.com has been undone. As to the 140 articles. I don't feel too strongly about them. They are somewhat promotional, yet within their limitations they seem to be done in a scholarly way. (They usually don't have WP:RS, though a Google search for the artist's name will often come up with interesting stuff). Many of these people seem to have exhibited in America. It is possible to think of these articles as a 'to-do list' for future work, where they can provide clues for somebody who wants to write about Cuban artists more seriously. That would be in the spirit of there is no deadline. If you want to nominate some of them for deletion, you of course have the ability. But if ArleArt goes on to create even more articles, let's talk. EdJohnston (talk) 02:51, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Hey, EdJohnston ... it looks as if ArleArt (talk · contribs) has been unheard from since 2007-12-23, (perhaps the WP:COI/N review scared them off :-), so I don't think that they'll be back Real Soon Now ... I may hang {{Warn-article}} on the first couple of dozen, but I won't bother to leave beau coup copies of {{Warn-editor}} on their talk page ... after a week, I may {{Prod}} a few to see if that generates any interest in improving them, but I don't think that any of them qualify for A7 speedy delete, and I'm not interested enough to take any of them to AfD unless it's as a mass deletion that lists at least a dozen articles ,e.g., no Google hits except to the aforementioned spam site & Wikipedia (these articles are listed on Google already!) ... but that's a project for Some Other day, since like DGG, I'm dealing with a family medical emergency at the moment, and ohana must always come First ... Happy Editing! —72.75.72.63 (talk) 03:29, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Recent activity

I have placed {{Warn-article}} on the Discussion pages of all 19 articles listed above ... I'll come back Some Other Time and add the appropriate {{Articleissues}} tags on their Main pages. —72.75.72.63 (talk) 04:22, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Some Other Editor put WP:PROD on a few of the articles,
which pinged me ... I'll add PRODs to the others. —72.75.72.63 (talk) 05:21, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Continuing deletions

Most of the ones in the list above have been deleted either by dated {{Prod}} or {{AfD}} ... here is a new list from contributions by 169.158.224.133 (talk · contribs):

  1. Osvaldo Yero Montero (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)
  2. Nelson Villalobo Ferrer (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)
  3. José Villa Soberón (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)
  4. Aguedo Jesús Alonso Labrador (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)
  5. Juan Francisco Elso Padilla (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)
  6. Harry Wilmer Tanner Todd (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)

I have put {{Warn-article}} on each of the articles' discussion pages, but since ArleArt appears to be MIA, I will not bother with {{Warn-editor}} tags, but instead will let BJBot update it with PROD and AfD notifications ... I have also identified some support editors:

I will add more editors to contact (and another list of PRODs) Real Soon Now ... Happy Editing! —72.75.72.63 (talk · contribs) 07:05, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I have created this sandbox to use as a checklist for improving these articles (as per the suggestion below), and invited other editors to add their names to the above list. —72.75.72.63 (talk) 23:15, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New information found from Google on artists in A-D in this category

Out of the 15 artists who are sorted into A-D in this category, I found some info from Google that might help show their notability. I was not impressed by anything I found for the other 11, and wouldn't object if those articles were deleted. Note that the articles shown in A-D in the category listing are usually sorted by the first name.

For an artist to be included in www.cubancontemporaryart.com I believe is not a distinction. It looks to me that it's a paid advertising site; it's not the same as being featured in a gallery.

Antonio Vidal Fernández (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)

  • His work is mentioned in Stimson and Sholette, Collectivism after Modernism; the search hit can be viewed in Google Books. [1].

Carlos del Toro Orihuela (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)

  • His work is featured in a Miami-based art gallery and some of his paintings can be viewed on line there. So at least he deserves a further look. [2].

César E.Trasobares (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)

  • He has a well-designed web site that shows some of his work. [3]. He is in some permanent museum collections in the USA. His work was exhibited at Florida International University: [4].

Circuba (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)

  • (WP article is only #2, they have Google hits). This is a circus performing group. They have toured in a lot of countries. [5]. See an online article (in Spanish) in a Nicaraguan newspaper. [6]. There are more hits that could be studied.

Waldo Diaz-Balart (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)

  • His work is featured in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art. He is interviewed in a 2006 article in the Miami Herald. [7]

It would be helpful if others who are interested in this group of artists could scan further down through the category and see what they can turn up via Google. I'm willing to do a default 'Keep' on anybody where the WP article is not the #1 hit on their name! Out of all the painters checked out recently, Rubén Torres Llorca is the star (of Google) since his Wikipedia article is the #6 hit on his name! EdJohnston (talk) 02:35, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I left a posting over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts inviting any experts to help us with this sorting activity. Note also that Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Visual arts explains how to tag a deletion debate so it will show up on the Visual Arts deletion list. EdJohnston (talk) 03:03, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
I linked the articles you added above, and I will flag them later tomorrow ... sleep beckons now. :-) —72.75.72.63 (talk · contribs) 07:15, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Visual arts

Please add new debates to the top here and paste the template {{subst:LVD}} on the actual AfD page to render:

It will automatically insert your name (and not my name!). Tyrenius (talk) 17:37, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hypothesis

I looked at this some time ago. I checked the web site which was on all the articles and it seemed like vanity site, so I presumed the artists in the article would be taken from it. However, the ones I checked I didn't find on it. I did find them on the Spanish wiki and the articles on here looked like a translation. I concluded the web site was being spammed, but not the artists, who were a WP:Coatrack for the site. This will need to be checked more thoroughly, but I hope it may be a help. Tyrenius (talk) 04:42, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

It seems like the list may be notable people, who were added by someone who added them in an inappropriate way. I am hoping we don't see more rounds of wholesale AFDs without the nominator taking the time to actually CHECK to see if they are notable. Pharmboy (talk) 12:55, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts/Infoart articles

See this page or an alternative approach to the problem, namely list all the articles, get a team of editors and over a period of time work through them, either approving or suggesting for deletion. If it's an obvious case, then admins on the team can do a speedy delete. Tyrenius (talk) 17:40, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! :-) Sounds like a Plan ... I'll make a sandbox page that lists all of the articles currently in this catagory, and then we can decide where is the best place to post it and look for contributors ... Happy Editing! —72.75.72.63 (talk · contribs) 20:20, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
OK ... see User talk:72.75.72.63/Cuban artists for the list ... you can just put the link on the appropriate project page, since there are 117 articles in the list ... I took German in high school, not Spanish, so I won't be able to do much except follow behind the others and do WikiGnome cosmetics and such for references found by Some Other Editor ... OTOH, I hope that by taking the time to create this list, I have shown good faith. :-) —72.75.72.63 (talk · contribs) 20:56, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
I've gone through and Prod'd a large number of them. My criteria was generally, did they seem unique or did they win a major international prize (and major to me included things like artist in resident at a university). Also, I don't think I Re-Prod'd any. MBisanz talk 09:05, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Last week I would have added a {{Prod-2}} to all of those article, but for now I'm confining myself to adding {{Warn-article}} and Project tags on the talk pages. :-) —72.75.72.63 (talk) 09:46, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Project in search of a mission

Well, I tried, and no one else seemed interested, so it's time for me to MOVE ON ... I have copied the checklist for Category:Cuban contemporary artists from my anon IP sandbox to Category talk:Cuban contemporary artists/Checklist and flagged a few articles ... [edit] ArleArt has returned

It appears that the WP:LINKSPAM has returned ... 200.55.139.212 (talk · contribs) and Reinadesaba (talk · contribs) are adding the same link removed by a bot after Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard/Archive 20#Category:Cuban contemporary artists from back in December.
