The LGBT studies WikiProject Newsletter! Issue XIV - February 29, 2008 Article Milestones The leprechaun is a male faerie in Irish mythology. We have one new Featured Article this month - Emily Dickinson was recently promoted thanks to the hard work of Yllosubmarine! We also have 4 new GA-class articles: Ben Daniels, J. Michael Bailey, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Walt Whitman were promoted this month, but Dante's Cove was demoted. Wikinews Things are happening over at Wikipedia sister project Wikinews. First, Nicholas Turnbull became the first openly-Trans reporter to gain (resounding) accreditation by the Wikinews community. Second, project member David Shankbone is going to Rio de Janeiro at the invitation of the Rio Convention & Visitor's Bureau. Wikinews:Portal:LGBT Lambda Book Report Project member Moni3 has been working on the article for Barbara Gittings and noted that the Lambda Literary Foundation used the lead paragraph from Wikipedia, skillfully and lovingly written by Moni3, verbatim in the Lambda Literary Pioneers calendar. Moni3 contacted the Lambda Literary Foundation to let them know, and to ask if we could get a little write-up in the next Lambda Book Report. There is a preliminary text you can find here. Feel free to add to it. It should be no longer than 1,000 words, and it needs to be submitted by March 15. Because the rule is meant to discourage linking to small obscure wikis on every page relating to the subject. However in this case, it's a wikia wiki with over 1000 articles and it's only the main article, so I see no harm in linking to it. If you'll check, you'll notice that many TV shows have links to a relating wiki. -- Scorpion⁰⁴²² 02:59, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

It doesn't work and doesn't look like it's going to unless I get a new computer and it could take me months to build up the heart to lose a few thousand bucks to get a decent computer (I'm a cheap bastard). My Firefox doesn't work at all now, but I did try it and I get the same result, Netscape and Firefox are supported by the same company. Davenport, Iowa

I received your request for a review of Davenport. Here are some comments:

• Bring the history further into the 20th Century. Get some Davenport (or general Iowa) history books to help:Y Done
  • History of Davenport and Scott County, Iowa by Harry E. Downer (1910)
  • Davenport, where the Mississippi Runs West: A Survey of Davenport History & Architecture (1982)
  • Newspaper archives are invaluable, if you have the patience.
• In "Geography" be more descriptive on the city's situation and its layout. A map would be invaluable here.
• In "Demographics" don't just list census data, but rather provide a profile or identity. Comparing key or salient city characteristics (eg. average age) with the state's can help.
• In "Notable natives" & "Points of interest" provide context of their relationship to the city, rather than simply listing. See Herne Bay, Kent#Notable people and Herne Bay, Kent#Landmarks as an example. --maclean 02:24, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Y Done

By "the city's situation" I mean how it is positioned vis-à-vis its surroundings, as in the natural environment or geological formations. This would be a natural extension on the Tornado Alley and Rivers paragraph. Its layout means its infrastructure and built environment. Providence, Rhode Island#Cityscape is a good example of describing the built environment. They are difficult to obtain but maps easily describe what the city looks like that paragraphs of prose would not accomplish. I've had some success getting towns to give maps like Image:Hudson's Hope BC map.PNG. --maclean 20:20, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Failure of your RfA

I saw this. If you think your anti-Bush opinion had any effect on failing your RfA, much less being the only reason it failed, you're going to fail your next RfA as well. The failure had nothing to do with your opinion of Bush. Davenport

The new size of those two images looks good. I think the article would be better if you would adjust the size of the remaining images to match. It might also help to shorten the descriptions/captions of the photos. Captions should be short and descriptive of the photo; additional info, like the comment about the price of city hall (citation needed here?) is best put into the article text itself. But mostly, if you reduce the size of all the images, I think you'll see that they all fit within the appropriate sections quite well, and doesn't appear cluttered. Cheers! Your comments

As one of the two only supporters of your recently failed RFA (the other being the nominator), I'm really, really not impressed by your comments here and especially here. I couldn't care less about your opinion of Bush, I find it completely irrelevant. What I do find relevant, though, is the ability to remain calm and cool-headed, neither of which is a trait you showed after failing RFA. What made me support your RFA? A lot of things. Your 9000+ edits. Your dedication to the project (seven straight months with 700+ edits). Your 41 reports to AIV. Your contributions to the mainspace. I really hope you stay, why was your RfA closed so early, I don't think it was a WP:SNOW case and what the hell was up with the about twenty opposes solely because of the userbox? Funny thing is, if the userbox said "believes" or "thinks" instead of "knows" I think it would have been acceptable as you're not stating a fact, still, I'd be more optimistic than to think that you were ruled out because of the actual opinion rather than the userbox, he's got like 15% approval ratings lol, so I doubt that the most of the people voting against you were actually pro-Bush. Hey, sorry to hear that you're becoming disillusioned with Wikipedia. I hope this didn't come as a result of your unsuccessful RFA last month, as you are a really good editor even if you are not ready to become a mop-wielder just yet! Antoine LeClaire

He's credited as the translator and multiple sources confirm he did do that. LeClaire comes up time again in translation situations, especially treaty signings. It has to be the same person, the only reason I question is that I have seen various spellings of the name, but that doesn't really mean anything I guess. Thanks for getting back to me. Conversion script continued for lightmouse's page

Try my script in your monobook for most pages: It converts to and from both imperial/U.S. customary and metric units. Just like Lightmouse's script, it is not prefect so manually checking your changes is a must!

In the page that you pointed out (here), no script will help with that table because it is a sortable table. The conversions will really mess up the sortablity of the table. In order to add square miles you will need to added a new separate column to the table. I'll see if I can help you with that...

I think if you add the line: // [[User:MJCdetroit/monobook.js]] to your monobook it should work after you clear your cache by hitting shift and reload. Otherwise, just copy and paste the code.

Ahh, it's good to see someone else as burnt out and fed up with wikipedia as I am! Thanks for telling me about your script, but when I copied it into my monobook, it didn't work. I think that I'll be able to add the square miles that table but it will be awhile because...well because. I'm not 100% sure (am no expert on this stuff) but I think it would have to be done line by line and broken apart. For example the line:

txt.value=txt.value.replace(/(\s)(\d{1,3}),?(000),?(000)(?:\s|-| )square(?:\s|-| )kilometres([^²\(]{4})/gi, '$1{{convert|$2$3$4|sqkm|sqmi|}}$5');

would break into FIND=

(\s)(\d{1,3}),?(000),?(000)(?:\s|-| )square(?:\s|-| )kilometres([^²\(]{4})

and in the REPLACE field would go:

$1{{convert|$2$3$4|sqkm|sqmi|}}$5
