[edit] Childhood and early career

Markus was born in 1953 in Budapest, Hungary.[1] His childhood in Hungary, where he frequented museums, is an influence on his work.[1] Early on the Renaissance, Neo-Classical and Romantic periods dominated his work. Though classically trained, the Avant Garde and Abstraction began to make their way into his work. The idea of the rebirth of humanity after the Middle Ages became a strong theme in his art. He became increasingly frustrated with teachers and the confines of communism. "I was very fed up," he said. "[The communist system] doesn't value the individual. They don't like freethinking minds. I was very desperate. For me it was not a good environment."

[edit] Paintings

Markus began his career as a sculptor. At the age of fourteen, he and his work were featured on international public television. As a youth he spent hours in museums, studying the paintings and sculpture of artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli, and El Greco. While his school friends dreamed of finding fame on the soccer field, young Markus was teaching himself from the works of the Old Masters. He was almost wholly self-taught and experimented with numerous techniques and mediums. He worked with glass, sculpture, ceramics, hand made papers, etchings, mono prints, and even animation. His paintings reflected the influences of the High Renaissance, Impressionism, and the Minoan, Classical Greek and Byzantine civilizations and cultures.

[edit] Books and limited edition prints

Markus is dedicated to the traditional art form of printmaking, with a particular focus on serigraphy. His reputation as an internationally renowned artist came largely from his serigraph prints. His first experiences with traditional printmaking, including etching, began around 1979. Markus often uses two or three copper plates when creating his etchings, and up to 20 colors when printing his serigraphs. He often combines elements of both mediums, such as mixing drypoint, aquatint and soft-ground etching techniques with graphite pencil. He does all of his own printing in his atelier.

Recently Markus, who self-publishes his work under the company name of Csaba Markus Atelier, expanded into the book publishing business in 2004, with his new company, Dreaming Muse.[2] The first published book was Gems and Rhapsodies , printed in 2004 (2004, ISBN 0-9746635-0-6).
