Based in the city of Petroşani, Jiul Petroşani is a Romanian football club currently playing in Liga 2.
The history of Jiul Petroşani goes back to 1919, when the club's name was Clubul Atletic al Minerilor din Petroşani (Athletic Club of Petroşani Miners). Its history was marked by frequent changes in names and home location; by fusion with and separation from the Jiul Petrila Football Club as well as by relegations to Romania's both second (Divizia B) and first (Divizia A) national football echelons.
Sponsored by miners' unions as of 1990, its chairman for a few years in the 1990s was Miron Cozma, the controversial miners' union leader.
Jiul Petroşani won Romania Cup in 1974 and was a runner-up in 1972. In 1979, Jiul was a runner-up in Balkans Cup.
