Crystal River Energy Complex
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Crystal River Energy Complex consists of five power-generating plants on a 4,700 acre (1,900 hectare) site near the mouth of the Crystal River in Citrus County, Florida. Crystal River 1 and 2 are fossil fuel power plants, Crystal River 3 is the sole nuclear power plant on the site, while Crystal River 4 and 5 are also fossil fuel power plants. The complex was developed by the Florida Power Corporation and is now owned and operated by Progress Energy Inc. With a summer generating capacity of 3,140 megawatts (as of April 2002), the complex was the seventh largest electric power generating site in the United States.
As of the Summer of 2006, the Progress Energy was considering plans to add a second nuclear power plant to the complex. However they have changed their focus to the possibility of two new reactors in Levy County, which is just North of the Crystal River Complex.[citation needed]
