Crystal Cavern

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Crystal Cavern is a small cavern located in Clay, Alabama, USA, now owned by a private individual. It is not open for public use at all.

This cavern was once open to the public as an attraction from the 1920's through the 1960's. There is still the foundation of the old gift shop at the base of the mountain.

The trail is steep and winding, but still has many of the concrete stairs put up in the 1920s. Also, several of the internal stairs have been torn out and used for firewood over the years. At one time it was used for a fallout shelter and had food supplies stored there. All trash and debris has been removed by a local spelunker group that is dedicated to preserving cave sites and exploring them.

This cave has also been known as Alabama Caverns and McCluney Cave through the years.
