Germany is now one state, so I uploaded a corrected version, also with less disk space. -Wikibob | Talk 09:21, 2004 May 1 (UTC)
- Disagree. The point of the separately-colored version is to show when the various countries joined the EU; West Germany has been in from the start, while East Germany didn't join until reunification in 1990. See also Crude-EU15.png, which this replaced. (Smaller size is a point, though.) Korath 11:46, May 1, 2004 (UTC)
Ah, I see the point now, the shade of green gets lighter, the later the state joins. I'll put back the border, but first I have a suggestion on improving the shading because on my (old) laptop screen there is little difference between the colours of the new 10 and Austria,Finland,Sweden.
These are the original colour codes for the various EU enlargements.
Countries R G B --------------------------------------- Benelux+France+W.Germany 44, 94, 44 Britain, Denmark Ireland, 44, 142, 44 Greece 44, 166, 44 Portugal,Spain 44, 186, 44 E.German unification 44, 210, 44 Austria,Finland,Sweden 44, 230, 44 the new 10 84, 254, 84 ---------------------------------------
I tried some changes and found lightening the new 10 an improvement: 104, 254, 104 (I also reduced colour depth to 256).
Here is my test image for your feedback:
There still seems to be enough shades of green left for 2 more enlargements. -Wikibob | Talk 17:51, 2004 May 1 (UTC)
- Looks fine to me, though I'm not sure where to fit two new shades of green as you claim; any lighter and they'll start blending into the white background, and any darker and they'd be too close to the current shades—I didn't realize East Germany was different from Austria/Finland/Sweden until I opened it up in Photoshop. I find it very hard to distinguish between these different shades. Please consider using different hues. -- Tarquin 09:13, 2 May 2004 (UTC)
- Here's a ridiculously garish, but at least easily distinguishable, version:
- I suppose a reasonable compromise between asthetics and clarity could be worked out if we just added in blues, but I'm not hopeful; it'll still clash with the other images on the page.
- Vaguely related, the Balearic Islands should be the same color as mainland Spain/Portugal, not Benelux/W Germany/France/Italy as in the original. We should probably also include a pixel or three for Malta. Korath 10:02, May 2, 2004 (UTC)
Three more variations: first one stretches the green hue to the max but doesn't allow for new shades; second uses blue shades for the first states; third is blue and green slightly tweaked. All have Malta added. Still not easy to separate some shades when they are not touching. I don't mind altering all the other maps to match.
