[edit] Discussion about advertising

I had the following discussion with Fraslet about whether information about Crossford hotels was advertising or not.

I've reproduced it here in case any other editor feels inclined to revert or remove the information, and might like to read this first so that we don't go round in circles...

I wrote a lot of the Crossford article which you've just edited. I'm sorry if you think that a description of local businesses amounts to advertising them. I think that the hotels are valuable local amenities which are a part of the economic and social fabric of the village. One provides the only local swimming pool, as well as other sports facilities. The other was an old coaching inn and is of historical significance. Would you like to suggest a wording that gives the factual information but which you do not regard as advertising?

Thanks - no antagonism intended :) Euchiasmus 21:50, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

I know, I'm sorry, but it really just adds up to advertising for the hotels themselves, the article is about the village. By all means mention the coaching inn and the swimming pool but try to remember that this is an encyclopedia and not the yellow pages. Fraslet 21:52, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
OK, I'll have a go. I'm nothing to do with any of the businesses in Crossford, so I have no interest in advertising them. What about my mention of all the other businesses in the village - do you think they are advertising too? I will just write simple descriptive facts, encyclopaedic style. Give me a few minutes, then tell me what you think...
Cheers :) Euchiasmus 22:13, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Done it. What do you think? Thanks for your comments - maybe including details like the number of rooms and when refurbished was excessive - so thanks for giving your opinion. Euchiasmus 22:14, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Oh that looks much nicer now! The claim "is one of the few original Coaching Inns left in Scotland" might need a citation though. Fraslet 22:22, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
It's actually in the reference I've quoted, so I've just moved the ref tag to the end of the sentence. Thanks for your teamwork on this article. (After all, teamwork is what WP is all about...) Cheers! Euchiasmus 22:30, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
D'oh, sorry I see that, not concentrating enough tonight! Fraslet 22:32, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
