Crowthorne railway station is a railway station in the town of Crowthorne in Berkshire, England. The station is managed by First Great Western, who operate services on the North Downs Line from Reading to Guildford, Redhill and Gatwick Airport.
The station has two platforms: platform 1 for services towards Gatwick Airport and platform 2 for services towards Reading. It has bicycle racks on both platforms, and a car park (approx. 42 spaces) adjacent to platform 2.
[edit] History
Crowthorne station was opened in 1859 as a result of pressure from the governors of Wellington College on the directors of the South Eastern Railway. The College also contributed £500 towards the cost of building the station, which was originally named "Wellington College for Crowthorne". This name remained until 17th June 1928, when it was renamed "Crowthorne". The old name board remained until World War II, though, when it was removed to prevent invading parachutists knowing where they were. Crowthorne station is located some 2000m from its High Street where most of its shops are located.
The station closed to goods in 1964, but its architecture was rejuvenated in 1986-87 with the provision of a new well-styled waiting shelter on platform 2, as part of a job-creation scheme. The main building was also extended slightly, at the time being the property of an electrical contractor.
The station fell under the North Downs subsector of Network SouthEast in 1989, being dedicated to Reading- Gatwick Airport/Tonbridge services.
Ticket purchasing was revived at Crowthorne in the 1990s when a ticket window was incorporated into the waiting shelter, opening at peak times. From 2007, ticketing machines operated at all other times, with the route being designated as a 'penalty fares zone'.
[edit] Services
Crowthorne is served by trains approximately every 60 minutes in each direction Monday to Saturday, and every two hours on Sundays. There are additional trains during peak periods on weekdays. Most trains operate between Reading and Shalford, near Guildford, with some continuing to Gatwick Airport.
