Crown Royal is the name of seventh studio album by Hip hop pioneers Run-D.M.C., released after long delays in 2001.

Crown Royal was mildly successful despite poor critical reviews, and was to have been followed by a 20th anniversary album in 2003 before the death of DJ Jam Master Jay at the end of 2002. The group soon retired after this news.

[edit] Album information

This album was a step away from their hip-hop roots, and featured more of a rock feel, with featured artists including Fred Durst, Stephan Jenkins and Sugar Ray. Other guest artists include: Everlast, Kid Rock, Nas, Prodigy, and Method Man.

DMC makes an appearance on only 3 tracks. This can either be attributed to vocal problems he had for several prior years or differences between his band mates. Neither speculation has been definitively confirmed.

Professional reviews:

  • Rolling Stone (3/15/01, p.78) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Run DMC prove their old-school mastery....Crown Royal uses the same musical strategy as their minor 1993 comeback, Down With The King: guest artists, guest artists, and more guest artists."
  • Entertainment Weekly (4/6/01, p.120) - "On this hip-hop roast, new schoolers Nas and Fat Joe pay their respects with sparkling grooves....Run's rhymes are still limber." - Rating: B-
  • NME (4/7/01, p.43) - 6 out of 10 - "Proves the emperors' new clothes canlook just as solid as their old threads."
