Crown Holdings Incorporated (formerly Crown Cork & Seal Company), founded in 1892 by William Painter, is a Fortune 500 company based in Philadelphia, USA. William Painter, an American of British descent, invented the crown cap for bottled carbonated beverages in 1891, and obtained a patent for it on February 2, 1892. From a modest beginning in 1892, the company had emerged as the world’s leading packaging company, and as of December 31, 2004, was operating 185 plants in 43 countries, and had a total of around 27,500 employees. It claims to manufacture one out of every five beverage cans used in the world, and one out of every three food cans used in North America and Europe.
