Crow Tribal Administration

The Crow Tribal Council, the government of the Crow Nation, selects a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, and Vice-Secretary at biennial elections. The officials are elected, more commonly, as a slate of candidates from several districts of the Crow Indian Reservation. The main role of the Chairperson is to serve as the Speaker of the body. The Vice-Chairperson serves in absence of the Chairperson. The Secretary is the clerk of the body, comparable to a Secretary of State, and official recorder of the Council. The Vice-Secretary serves in absence of the Secretary.
The Chairperson evolved into a very powerful position that encompassed the Speaker of the body, majority leader, and Chief Executive Officer of the Crow Tribal Offices. In most government organizations, these three unique positions were appointed to three different persons.
