Crocidurinae hikmiya Meegaskumbura, Meegaskumbura, Manamendra-Arachchi, Pethiyagoda, & Schneider, 2007 |
Crocidura hikmiya has been recently described by Dr. Suyama Meegaskumbura (University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and Boston University, MA, USA) and others from the rainforests of the Rakwana hills (mostly World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka). The description is based on both morphological and molecular data. Its closest sister species is the Ceylon long-tailed shrew, another Sri Lankan crocidurine shrew that is restricted to the high-elevation habitats of the Central Highlands. C. hikmiya has a shorter tail than the Ceylon long-tailed shrew (most of the other characteristics that distinguish the two species are osteological in nature).
