Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion/Templates (images)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reasons for changing speedy-delete template wording:

  • Correspond more closely with the criteria for speedy deletion (CSD)
  • Brevity/clarity
  • Avoid using italics in a way that might imply a direct quote of the CSD
  • Often saying "(See CSDXX)" rather than just "(CSDXX)" to avoid implying a direct quote

Implementation:

  • To delete "The reason given is:", for brevity, transclude new template Template:speedybase instead of Template:db-meta.

Criterion for speedy deletion Current template wording suggested wording New! summary parameter (wording for edit summary of deletion log)
i1 redundantimage Template:db-i1/new Template:db-i1/doc Redundant. Any image or other media file that is a redundant copy, in the same file format and same or lower quality/resolution, of something else on Wikipedia. This does not apply to images duplicated on Wikimedia Commons, because of licence issues; these should be tagged with {{subst:ncd|Image:newname.ext}} or {{subst:ncd}} instead. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: This image is a redundant (all pixels the same or scaled down) copy of [[:Image:{{{1}}}]], in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not Commons), and all inward links have been updated (CSD I1) This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion . This image or other media file is a redundant copy, in the same file format, and at the same or lower quality/resolutions, of [[:Image:{{{1}}}]], which is on Wikipedia (not Commons), and all inward links have been updated. (See CSD I1) Redundant copy of another image. (CSD I1)
i2 noimage Template:db-i2/new Template:db-i2/doc Corrupt or empty image. Before deleting this type of image, verify that the MediaWiki engine cannot read it by previewing a resized thumbnail of it. Even if it renders, if it contains superfluous information that cannot be accounted for as metadata directly relating to the image data, it may be deleted. It is always possible for the uploader to correct the problem by uploading an image that contains only a good image plus acceptable metadata. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: This is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.(CSD I2).}} This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as a corrupt or empty image. (Try previewing a resized thumbnail before deleting. See CSD I2). Corrupt or empty image. (CSD I2)
i3 noncom Template:db-i3/new Template:db-i3/doc Improper license. Images licensed as "for non-commercial use only", "non-derivative use" or "used with permission" that were uploaded on or after May 19, 2005, except where they have been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [1] This includes images licensed under a "Non-commercial Creative Commons License".[2] Such images uploaded before May 19, 2005 may also be speedily deleted if they are not used in any articles. This image may meet Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only" or "used with permission for use on Wikipedia only" which was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 or is not used in any articles (CSD I3). This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only", "non-derivative use" or "used with permission" which either was uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 and has no fair use rationale, or is not used in any articles. (See CSD I3). Image with improper license. (CSD I3)
i4 unksource Template:db-i4/new Template:db-i4/doc Lack of licensing information. Images in category "Images with unknown source", "Images with unknown copyright status", or "Images with no copyright tag" that have been in the category for more than seven days, and which still lack the necessary information, regardless of when uploaded. Note, editors sometimes specify their source in the upload summary, so be sure to check the circumstances of the image. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: It is an image with unknown source or unknown copyright status which has been tagged as unknown for more than 7 days (CSD I4).}} This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as an image with unknown source or unknown copyright status which has been tagged as unknown for more than 7 days and still lacks the necessary information. (Remember to check the upload summary. See CSD I4). Image with unknown source or copyright status. (CSD I4)
i5 unfree Template:db-i5/new Template:db-i5/doc Unused unfree images. Images and other media that are not under a free license or in the public domain, that are not used in any article, and that have been tagged with a template that places them in a dated subcategory of Category:Orphaned fairuse images for more than seven days. Reasonable exceptions may be made for images uploaded for an upcoming article. Use {{subst:orfud}} to tag images for forthcoming deletion. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: Unfree image which has not been used in any article for more than seven days ("orphaned unfree image") (CSD I5).}} This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as an unfree image or other medium which is not used in any article and has been in the Orphaned fairuse images category for more than seven days, with reasonable exceptions for images uploaded for an upcoming article. (See CSD I5). Unfree image not used in any article (CSD I5)
i6 norat Template:db-i6/new Template:db-i6/doc Missing non-free use rationale. Non-free images or media claiming fair use but without a use rationale may be deleted seven days after they are tagged. The boilerplate copyright tags setting out fair use criteria do not constitute a use rationale. Offending images can be tagged with {{subst:nrd}}, and the uploader notified with {{subst:missing rationale|Image:image name}}. Such images can be found in the dated subcategories of Category:Images with no fair use rationale. If a use rationale is provided but disputed, this criterion does not apply. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: Unfree image with no fair use rationale uploaded after May 4, 2006 which has been tagged as not having a rationale for more than 7 days (CSD I6).}} This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as a non-free image or medium claiming fair use but with no fair use rationale which has been tagged as not having a rationale for more than 7 days (See CSD I6). Image etc. claiming fair use but with no use rationale (CSD I6)
i7 badfairuse Template:db-i7/new Template:db-i7/doc Invalid fair-use claim. Non-free images or media that fail any part of the non-free content criteria and were uploaded after 13 July 2006 may be deleted forty-eight hours after notification of the uploader. For media uploaded before 13 July 2006 or tagged with the {{Replaceable fair use}} template, the uploader will be given seven days to comply with this policy after being notified. Invalid fair-use claims may be tagged with {{subst:dfu}} for review after a seven-day period, and the uploader may be notified with {{subst:no fair|Image:image name}}. Such images can be found in the dated subcategories of Category:All disputed non-free images. Non-free images or media with a clearly invalid fair-use tag (such as a {{logo}} tag on a photograph of a mascot) may be deleted at any time. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: It is a non-free image with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it is an image that fails some part of the non-free content criteria and the uploader has been given 48 hours' notification (for images uploaded after 2006-07-13) or seven days' notification (for images uploaded before that date). (CSD I7) This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion as a non-free image that fails some part of the non-free content criteria after the uploader has been given 48 hours' notification (for images uploaded after 2006-07-13) or seven days' notification (for images uploaded before that date or tagged {{Replaceable fair use}}). (CSD I7) Non-free image that fails any part of the non-free content criteria. (CSD I7)

i9 imgcopyvio Template:db-i9/new Template:db-i9/doc Blatant copyright infringement. The image was copied from a website or other source that does not have a license compatible with Wikipedia, and the uploader does not assert (other than through image tags) that it is public domain, freely licensed, fair use, or used with permission. Sources that do not have a license compatible with Wikipedia include stock photo libraries such as Getty Images or Corbis. Blatant infringements should be tagged with the {{Db-imgcopyvio}} template. Non-blatant copyright infringements should be discussed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. This page may meet Wikipedia’s criteria for speedy deletion. The reason given is: This image is suspected to be a copyright infringement, and the uploader does not assert public domain, fair use, or a free license. (See CSD I9) Copied from a source that does not have a license compatible with Wikipedia. (CSD I9)

[edit] Comments

I9 needs to say there is no free license "other than through tags" which is what the criteria says. Otherwise, a {{self}} is enough to defeat this. -Nard 02:22, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I inserted "other than through tags" into the above suggested wording and the draft template Template:db-i9. --Coppertwig (talk) 18:34, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

I support these changes by Moonriddengirl and have copied them to the draft templates: Changing a period to a comma in I3; inserting "or other medium" in I5 (actually, she had "media" and I changed it to the singular "medium"), and inserting "or tagged replaceable fair use" in I7. --Coppertwig (talk) 01:44, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Details of I6 wording

Slight differences in wording (involving the words "which" and "and"):

  • In the table above: "as a non-free image or medium claiming fair use but with no fair use rationale which has been tagged as not having a rationale for more than 7 days"
  • Happy-melon's version in template which has two "which's": "...as a non-free image or media file, which claims fair use but has no fair use rationale, which has been tagged as not having a rationale for more than 7 days."
  • I, thinking that if there are two "which's" it's good to have an "and" between them, just changed it in the template to: "as a non-free image or media file, which claims fair use but has no fair use rationale, and which has been tagged as not having a rationale for more than 7 days" --Coppertwig (talk) 01:58, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] I7 wording (grace period)

The template currently says "as a non-free image that fails some part of the non-free content criteria, after the uploader has been given appropriate notification. The grace period is 48 hours for images uploaded after 2006-07-13, or seven days for images uploaded before that date or tagged with the {{Replaceable fair use}} template or similar" I like Happy-melon's use of "grace period" in the wording like that; however, this still suffers from the problem I described at WT:Criteria for speedy deletion#I7 self-contradictory. I suggest changing the 2nd part to one of these (I prefer the first):

  • "The grace period is 48 hours, except that a grace period of seven days is given for images uploaded before 2006-07-13 or tagged with the Replaceable fair use template or similar."
  • "The grace period is 48 hours for images uploaded after 2006-07-13 which are not tagged with the Replaceable fair use template or similar, and seven days otherwise."
