[edit] License tagging for Image:71p1010084.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:71p1010084.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 02:04, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

first off, i gave emporis as my source. i don't give in to hallow threats, so leave me alone. I have a life outside of the internet. go ahead and delete all you want if that gets you off. i just hope that doesn't make you look too immature. besides, you never specified how you want me to re-write them. so go and nominate everything for deletion, and i'll counter with a speedy keep for every single one RaccoonFoxTalkStalk 02:49, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deleted page "Hotel Pontchartrain (2nd nomination)"

A page you created, or image you uploaded, Hotel Pontchartrain (2nd nomination), has been deleted in accordance with our deletion policy. In particular, it meets the one or more criteria for speedy deletion; the relevant criterion is:

No content whatsoever. Any article consisting only of links elsewhere (including hyperlinks, category tags and "see also" sections), a rephrasing of the title, and/or attempts to correspond with the person or group named by its title.

Wikipedia has certain standards for inclusion that all articles must meet. Certain types of article must establish the notability of their subject by asserting its importance or significance. Additionally, since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, content inappropriate for an encyclopedia, or content that would be more suited to somewhere else (such as a directory or social networking website) is not acceptable. See What Wikipedia is not for the relevant policy.

You are welcome to contribute content which complies with our content policies and any applicable notability guidelines. However, please do not simply re-create the page with the same content; it will be deleted again and may be protected from re-creation. [edit] Re: Deleting Pages

Criticalthinker wrote:

Hello,
You recently deleted my nomination for the Hotel Pontchartrain in Detroit. Now, I've been here for quite some time, but I find this process a bit overwhelming, and I'm unable where I've made my mistake in nominating the page for deletion? I've read the deletion pages, but can't figure out how to get the reason to show for why I nominated a page for deletion. The fact is many people have expressed interest in ridding us of the ridiculous skyscraper pages for Detroit, of which he makes pages for the smallest and most insignificant of Detroit high-rises. Help! --Criticalthinker 08:39, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi, apologies for the confusion; I should have explained more thoroughly. It looks like you've figured it out now, anyway. What happened was you created a page at Hotel Pontchartrain (2nd nomination) – since this doesn't start with "Wikipedia:", you were effectively starting a new article called "Hotel Pontchartrain (2nd nomination)", which obviously we don't need. Deletion discussion pages should be named "Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/" followed by the name of the page. The quickest way to nominate an article for deletion is to add {{subst:afd}} to the article, save the page, then click the "Preloaded debate" link at the bottom of the notice – this will bring up the correct page along with instructions on what to do next – Gurch 13:42, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello. You have edited this AfD after it was closed, inserting a "keep" comment. Please do not do this - it says right there, in red letters:

Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the article's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this page.

[edit] Jackson, Michigan

Hello, I'm a Wikipedian from Jackson. The history section is a good idea. I'm going home for winter break on Tuesday, and I plan on expanding that section using a book I have on the history of Jackson (we need some references on that page). I'm hoping to model this page after Ann Arbor, Michigan, a current featured article. Hopefully we can eventually make Jackson an FA as well. Do you have any other ideas? Dafoeberezin3494 15:39, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, some of the most important things the FA people are looking for right now are making sure articles are NPOV, and that articles have refs + inline citations. I've never written one myself, so I'm not sure what else they will look for. Anyway, thanks again for the chart and if you have any other ideas, add them to the page. Happy editing! Dafoeberezin3494 03:42, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

I sent an email to Ella Sharp, asking for some help on the history section. I added the motor sports section tonite. Judging by the clump of "edit" tags, I fear I might've messed up the formatting tho. Tim Wohlford, Jackson.

[edit] Spring Arbor, Michigan vs. Spring Arbor, Michigan (CDP)

You may post on my user page if you wish about the CDP issue. I'm really interested in understanding how the SA CDP article vs. the SA Community article confuses you. I'm completely open to comment, but I still object to merging the CDP article with the Community article simply because the two are not the same.
I see that you are form Jackson, which is near to Spring Arbor. The best regional comparison I can give is that the community of Jackson is not the same as the "City of Jackson." Jackson extends beyond this area into Blackman, Summit and Leoni Townships. The "community" of Jackson fits this concept, however the "City of Jackson" obviously does not. The Spring Arbor, Michigan (CDP) is comparable to the area immediately surrounding the City of Jackson's DDA. Obviously "Jackson" includes more than just the DDA. Likewise, it would not make sense to say that Jackson, Michigan includes only the City of Jackson, Michigan (referring to the municipality); it includes the actual community. The Spring Arbor, Michigan (CDP) was specifically designated to give statistics specific to the area immediately surrounding Spring Arbor University.
If the statistics for the Jackson Downtown Development Authority were merged with the Jackson, Michigan article as if the Jackson, Michigan article referred to the DDA, it would not make sense. The Jackson, Michigan article does not refer specifically to the DDA of Jackson; it refers to a much larger area. This closely parallels on the same level as is currently being proposed by merging the CDP article with the community article, as would be the case if one were to suggest merging the Jackson DDA with the Jackson, Michigan article. Please let me know what objections you have that confuse you about the current article. I'm willing to work out a wording that will fit both your understanding and my own local understanding. mdkarazim 03:34, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Help on Ogg

You are not very clear. What operating system are you on? What kind of software did you try? And more importantly what kind of Ogg files did you try to play? Audio? Video? Mixed?

I'll assume you are on Windows, and trying to play a video. You should install illi's codecs as mentioned on the steps in the page. Then you open your Direct Show player (I assume it's WMP), and drag and drop the file into it.--Saoshyant talk / contribs (I don't like Wikipedophiles) 11:39, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

If you want a media player that can play literally every format on the planet without having to install additional codecs, I highly recommend VideoLAN [1]. When you install VideoLAN, if you tick 'ActiveX plugin' and 'Mozilla plugin' (for Firefox browser, which I recommend [2]), then when you click on an OGG file on Wikipedia, it will play it within your web browser. Otherwise, when you click on an OGG file it will open it in a seperate VLC player window. Madder 21:07, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
I just wnat to play it in Windows Media Player, and even after installing the codecs provided in the "help" page for ogg it still didn't work in WMP when just clicking on ogg here at wikipedia an expecting it to open my WMP. --Criticalthinker 21:15, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Again I recommend VLC, but if you want to use WMP, you need to install the Windows Media Player plugin for Ogg vorbis - see [3]. If you right-click the link to an OGG vorbis file on Wikipedia, choose Save as, save the file, then start WMP and attempt to open the file, does it play? And which version of WMp are you using? Madder 21:24, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Carrying on. After you install illi's codecs, the next step is to make WMP the default player for all Ogg files. What you need to do, is save one Ogg file to the disk (video or audio), right click on it, choose Open With, Choose Program, then scan the software list for WMP, and before you click the OK button, tick on the check box "Make this application the default one for this file type", or some similar option (it shouldn't be hard to find). From then one, every Ogg file should open by default on WPM.

If you find these tips useful, you may want to help other people in the future, who may have difficulties with Ogg files. It's your choice, though.--Saoshyant talk / contribs (I don't like Wikipedophiles) 14:57, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:1theRapid-on.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:1theRapid-on.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 07:05, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Campus Martius

While I haven't seen anything that says specifically that Campus Martius Park is 'city-owned', the Conservancy section of the park's website says the Detroit 300 Conservancy is "responsible for management, maintenance and operation of the Park under a long term operating agreement with the City of Detroit." If the park was privately owned, it would seem such an agreement would need to be with the person or company that owns it, not the City. Also, under the history section of that site, the references to Dennis Archer, Kwame Kilpatrick, and the City Council says to me that this was very much a city project, although like many park projects, it was funded by private donations. While none of these are conclusive, it seems it would be more likely that this is city-owned than private.--Scottr76 14:30, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

I have emailed Robert Gregory, President of the Detroit 300 Conservancy, at the email address listed on the site's 'Staff' page. I'll share the response with you when I receive it.--Scottr76 21:32, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Commercial use of Image:Michigan Tri-County Region.gif

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Michigan Tri-County Region.gif, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Michigan Tri-County Region.gif has a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission, which was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 or is not used in any articles (CSD I3). While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, this is in fact not the case[4][5]. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. See our non-free content guidelines for more more information.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. This bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:Michigan Tri-County Region.gif itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. If you have any questions about what to do next or why your image was nominated for speedy deletion please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thanks. --Android Mouse Bot 2 02:57, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Chilean population updates

Hi Criticalthinker.

I've noted that you've made some updates to populations in several Chilean settlements, however, you haven't cited your sources. Most of the articles refer to the 2002 census which although is dated, is published and readily available.

One of the biggest weaknesses of many articles on Chile is their lack of documented sources. If you have reliable recognized sources for your updates, I'd encourage you to cite them in the articles you edit, even if the previous version didn't have specific citations -- this will help improve the quality of each article. Thanks --JAXHERE | Talk 15:08, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

I'll site them, but as you already said, the official 2002 is easily accessible. I thought it enough to simply say that it was from the 2002 Census. --Criticalthinker 20:25, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia:List_of_policies#Content_and_Style is the ultimate word on this. Put into practice, the more we can cite sources, the better the article will be. Even though a source may be readily availble, we are assuming that every reader of each article knows this and where to find it if we don't include it. It's hard to add a source to material in an existing article because you're not the one putting it in, but it would be a great habit to cite sources when adding or updating an article. --JAXHERE | Talk 15:25, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lincoln Park, Michigan

You recently changed the population density on this article. However, 44,008/5.8= 7587 as originally shown, not 6834. I am missing something? Rmhermen 19:33, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Found the problem with this one. Arkyan mistakenly changed the population to 44008 instead of 40008 when he/she put the geobox in the article. Rmhermen 02:19, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Huron Charter Township

What is the menaing of your edit to this page. "Metro: 386.2" What could this refer to? Rmhermen 19:36, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Grosse Ile Township, Michigan

Your edit to this article appears to be incorrect (by 0.4 people/sq.km) but more importantly is introducing far to many significant figures to this number. I reduced it to 4 figures although really it should only show 2 or 3 because of the limit of accuracy of the land area figure. Rmhermen 19:40, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Where are you sourcing this information from? "And, just so you know, population density is given in every articles "geography" sections, which takes into account the entire land area to the nearest acre, so it is much, much more accurate than simply taking the density to the nearest tenth of a square mile." Wikipedia articles do not list down to the acre. Rmhermen 22:45, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The infobox on Acapulco

I don't see any problem; the word 'Municipality' is only used twice, and each time it's used as a one-word heading for a row (and so no nobr is needed). Am I missing something? --ais523 08:36, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

There's still no visible problem for me; it's probable that the problem only shows up with certain browser settings for things like font sizes, and such problems have been known to happen only on certain browsers too (I'm using Firefox 2 at the moment). You might want to mention this on the technical village pump; the regulars there are better at both finding the problem and figuring out how to fix it than I would be just by myself, as with more people looking into it there's more of a chance that the exact problems causing the conditions will be reproduced. --ais523 08:48, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Removing references from the infoboxes

Please do not remove the references from the infobox. We should never just assume that the Infobox information is assumed to be correct, as you put it. Anyone can say anything. Please familiarize yourself with WP:REF and WP:VERIFY.

If the references are placed inappropriately in the infobox, please try to move them to the appropriate "footnotes" fields (e.g., government_footnotes). This will help unclutter the infobox.

Also, please familiarize yourself with the all parameter field names at {{Infobox Settlement}} (aka Infobox City). As some of your edits to the infoboxes were mislabeling the fields. The first field in the "leader" section is leader_title and leader_name. Then followed by leader_title1 and leader_name1,...2...3,.

All of your edits seemed to be in goodfaith and added some useful information; therefore I only reverted the parts of your edits that were incorrect. Regards, —MJCdetroit 13:59, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

At several of the talk pages for the individual Emirates of the UAE, queries or proposals have been put forth for having separate articles for the emirates and their eponymous capitals (e.g. here and here. As of now, two of the emirates have been disambiguated from their capitals: Abu Dhabi (emirate) / Abu Dhabi and Ajmān / Ajmān (city). [edit] Delhi

The commonly tabulated figure for the "city" of Delhi by Census India is only the urban part. If you are going to use the 1397 sq km figure, I think you should be able to simply subtract off the other two municipalities (303263 + 124917) from the state figure. --Polaron | Talk 00:30, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

The problem is that World Gazetteer uses the urban part of the municipality (which is what Census India actually tabulates) as the basis for its estimates. I suppose we could simply use its estimate for the state and substract its estimates for the two other municipalities. --Polaron | Talk 00:43, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
