To-do list for Crime in Sydney:

Isn't this a bit OTT? Sure, Sydney probably has the highest crime rate in Oz, but isn't the perception getting way in front of the reality? Much and all as we Melbournites like to remind you of being a prison colony and all :)--Robert Merkel

Well, I did not create that page, but Sydney does have a crime history at least worth mentioning. You could try to wrte a bit more about Melbourne crime, eg Squizzy Taylor and the Painters and Dockers Union. - Arno

Why does this rate a separate page? Why can't it be folded into the Sydney article? Are we going to create articles about crime in every city in the world? -- Zoe

This is getting WAY out of control. This is not a newspaper, it's an encyclopedia. -- Zoe

Yes, this page is absurd and Wikipedia is not a news report. We have already deleted the minor terrorist acts article and I say we do the same here. There is no reason to have a timeline of random acts of violence in just one city. Do(es) the author(s) plan on listing every rape and hold-up that has ever occurred in this city -- only then could this article even be marginally useful? I say we move the content here to metapedia and let the author finish there. --mav

I deleted the gang rape details and redirected the main page to Sydney, Australia. -- Zoe

This is no random rape or hold up. Four separate cases of gang rape in a period of a few weeks, seven separate victims, dozens of perperatrors, all belong to the same ethnic group. It is relevant to the issue of ethnic relations in Sydney. There are already articles on other major crimes, why not include this?

Because Wikipedia is not a news report -- there are at least 4 rapes in my city every day - many of which are race related or due to a serial rapist - so what? Unless this turns out to be especially notorious it is not of encylcopedic interest. -mav

In Sydney it is especially notorious. Your average crime doesn't result in a change in the criminal law (which these ones did). Your average crime doesn't create a political fuss over whether the Premier is being ethnically sensitive or not.

Also Zoe you sense an agenda? You mean an anti-Muslim agenda. Even the Mufti of Australia, Sheik Tajeddine Hamed el Hilaly, says the perpertrators were Muslim. see [1]

Agree partially with mav. Wikipedia is certainly not a new report but rapes trageted at any ethnic groupd are major crimes. Those verses could be editied and place under rape with links to Sydney, Australia so it would be less gross to read. If there are pages only talks about crimes of specific cities, Crime in Sydney and cases of rapes do deserve a page to show no discrimination on any city. - user:Ktsquare

Ktsquare, I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. I don't think ANY city should have its own crime page. Sydney is certainly no different from any other major world city in its crime, its rapes, nor its rapes committed by or targeted towards particular ethnic groups. -- Zoe
Clarifying my points here:
If crime pages of any city exist on wikipedia, then we either
1) delete all pages and incorporate the contents into other pages judging by kinds of crimes
2) re-create Crime in Sydney and put cases of rape there.
If those pages do not exist, contents from Crime in Sydney could be edited and placed under rape and other crime pages with links to Sydney, Australia so it would be less gross to read. -Ktsquare

Ktsquare - you say it sounds gross - I quite agree. In fact, I edited out some of the grossness present in the newspapers (the rapists have been quoted saying some things a lot more vile than what you read there). But life is gross and people shouldn't censor out grossness... but since people don't want it on wikipedia i put it on metapedia

I have yanked this from the main "Sydney" article mainly to get it out of the road and not create a misleading impression of the place. It needs serious work and some actual perspective. --Robert Merkel 04:11 10 Jun 2003 (UTC)

This was obviously written by a victorian. It has no place in wikipedia. I agree it should be deleted or an equivalent article on Melbourne gangland shootings should be written! NSWelshman 15:25, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

there is one for the melbourne killings.

[edit] NPOV

I find this article embarrassing to read as a Sydneysider. It doesn't even attempt to be NPOV, and instead lists every single terrorist act that's ever occurred. As a current expatriate of Sydney in the United States, battling with the "penal colony" impression of Australia, I find this article appalling. This needs a serious rewrite. Werdna648T/C\@ 21:19, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Terrorist attacks are worth mentioning, and, as much as we'd all like to deny it, sydney WAS a penal colony.

Compared to much of the western world, Australia enjoys lower crime rates. Not only this, but crime in Sydney is generally falling and falling fast. Perhaps looking to your close neighbours New Zealand and the city of Auckland will cause a rethink about the direction of crime in Sydney! Auckland is becoming VERY dangerous!

I'm a Sydneysider, and the crimes listed on this page are the most media-covered incidents, i.e. the OJ Simpsons and et al of the Sydney metropolitan area. I think it's great to have this page (ease of reference); some may feel it is not NPOV, but these terrible things happen no matter what the name of your city is. Get over it. Also, FYI, from what I hear from friends in NZ, the new mentality that Auckland has become some sort of hub of criminal activity (i.e. street gangs and etc) is sensationalised by the media (on both national and international levels).

[edit] Citations Needed

I covered this article with tags for citations. Ordinarily I would consider this overkill, but there are lots of people identified here by name. I am concerned that this article may be libelous. (I'm not Australian, so I have no idea how much of this content may be common knowledge for Australians.) I suggest that if anything here can't be verified pretty quickly, the names of people & organizations information should be removed. Zadeez 01:56, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

I think a lot of the confusion could be cleared up here if the page was renamed "Organised Crime in Sydney" and the rape and kidnap examples left out, perhaps put onto other pages if people think they're important. The article is mainly about organised crime anyway. 58.104.216.62 13:57, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Jon

"In the late 1960s, following the 1965 election of the Liberal state government headed by Robert Askin, there was a drastic realignment of criminal activities as the old Australian Labor Party-protected networks dissolved"

Deleted part of the above live. Do not put it back in without a proper source. Whoever wrote that line should be very careful about what they write in Wikipedia articles. Tigerman2005 (talk) 13:11, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
