[edit] Plot summary

In this episode, Goren gets an interim partner (Bishop) when Eames goes on maternity leave, and focuses his investigation on the murder of a female newspaper reporter found slain in the apartment of a fellow correspondent.

During the investigation, Goren find that the victim had romantic relationships with the writer, but he question the out-of-town alibi of the man when he fails to file expense accounts. When he look deeper into the case, he discover that the reporter fabricated comments, concocted scenes, and lifted material from other newspapers and wire services, in order to create the impression he had been somewhere or seen someone.

In addition, Goren learn that the reporter's father is a brilliant literature professor who has pushed his son into increasingly difficult investigative reporting. He also discover the victim may have been romantically involved with her editor, and could also have been helping plagiarise and invent stories for the newspaper. But he wonders why the editor seems to be covering for his star reporter who seems to have achieved acclaim for filing false stories.

Finally, Goren uncover an evidence that could well have been enough reason to silence the victim, until he find a looming psychological component that is crucial to putting a bulletproof case together.

[edit] Quotes

[A crime scene detective ask Goren and Bishop]
Detective: You two don't take notes?
Goren: Uh, we haven't worked that out yet.
[A few minutes later]
Detective: You might want to make a note? That's probably the murder weapon.

[After Goren causes an embarrasing scene with a potential suspect]
Bishop: So you know? I did not enjoy that.
Goren: No? Eames would have.

[Bishop, Eames and Goren, opining about an evidence]
Bishop: $220 at a shot; sometimes $440; sometimes twice a night.
Eames: Are these late night withdrawals?
[Bishop nods]
Eames: Cash machines at strip bars charge you a 10% premium. A $200 lap dance will cost you $220.
[Goren grins proudly]
Goren: You see what you miss not working Vice?

[To Goren]
Bishop: If you were showing me how to turn a friendly witness into a hostile one, you succeeded.

[Out of the conference room, after Goren torpedoes the case against a suspect]
Carver: Are you working for the defense now?

[edit] Facts

  • The title of this episode, Pravda, is crearly a word play rooted in the name of the leading newspaper of the Soviet Union from 1912 through 1991, which is also a term for the truth (Russian: Правда).
  • Interestingly, this episode revealed many resemblances with the case of Jayson Blair, an staff reporter for the New York Times for nearly four years, who was forced to resign in May 2003 after he committed frequent acts of journalistic fraud.
  • During the plot, Goren looks reluctant to be confined or closed in small spaces (like in the episode Cherry Red).
