[edit] Plot summary
Detectives Goren and Eames investigate the death of a prominent atheist leader who is kidnapped, ransomed and murdered. They discover that the crime, fueled by a need for sympathy and publicity as well as greed, began close to home.
As the detectives delve into the family environment, they interview the victim's granddaughter, who was also kidnapped but survived. The suspects list include more family members, including the dead woman's son, now a reverend with a prison ministry.
Nevertheless, when the kidnappers turn up dead, Goren and Eames look for a double-crossing mastermind who pulled the strings but left no trail to follow.
