[edit] Shootings
Firearms are very common in Turkey and large numbers of people are shot each year. In August 2007 nine people were killed by bullets in this way, with another 29 wounded including many children, leading to calls for more gun control. In one incident in Aydın a 12-year old girl died in her mother's arms when guns were produced during a dispute and on World Peace Day September 1st 2007, a man in İnegöl was killed in a random drive-by shooting. The August 2007 incident list is as follows:
- 4/8/2007: 27 year-old Önder Şenerler, security guard in a bar in Taksim, Istanbul coming to investigate the sound of gunfire at the entrance, was shot in the head. He had been married for 15 days.
- 6/8/2007: The bride and a guest at a wedding in Samsun Çarşamba were wounded by bullets from guns let of in celebration.
- 7/8/2007: Gaziantep- 41 year-old Hatice Aslan, was killed by guns fired at a wedding 200 metres away.
- 8/8/2007: 21 year-old soldier Yusuf Iğ, was killed by random gunfire while on duty in Sakarya.
- 9/8/2007: Hatay Samandağ - a pump-action shotgun fired in the air in celebration injured a 12 year-old.
- 13/8/2007: At a village wedding in Kütahya the 15-year old brother-in-law fired a pump-action shotgun into the air injuring 5 people.
- 18/8/2007: Ahmet Ayaz was harvesting hazelnuts in Trabzon when he was killed by bullet to his heart. He left a 2 year-old son, whose mother is only 18. The couple were not married.
- 20/8/2007: Şanlıurfa Viranşehir - 47 year-old Mehmet Emin Özkan killed Ali Çelebi and wounded Hasan Camlı as they tried to stop firing his gun into the air at a wedding. Also in Viranşehir 29 year-old mother of two Havva Karakaya was sleeping on the roof when she was killed by a bullet to the chest. The gun has not been found.
- 24/8/2007: Denizli - 16 year-old Mahir Büyükçulhacı was shot in the chest in a drive-by shooting while going out to buy potato chips.
- 27/8/2007: Denizli - mother of two Emine Horzum was shot in the neck while passing by someone cleaning his gun on the balcony.
- 28/8/2007: Trabzon Vakfıkebir - Fatma Tanrıkulu was wounded by a stray bullet in a mosque. Gaziantep - 10-year old Seda Kara was shot in the left leg while sleeping on the roof.
- 29/8/2007: At a wedding in Trabzon Nuray Çakıroğlu was shot in the arm while 8-month old baby Ezel Irmak was wounded in the stomach. In Eskişehir the village registrar muhtar Hüseyin Kırıkçı, accidentally shot Mehmet Ünal.
- 30/8/2007: Ankara -in a drunken incident at a nightclub off-duty police officer Bülent Kaynak was kileld trying to take a gun off Cemal Y..
- 31/8/2007 Adana 15 year-old Ahmet Aktaş was cycling home when he was wounded by a bullet that 16 year-old C.K. had fired at a passing car. In Didim Şebnem Öner was walking in the street with her two children when they found themselves in the middle of a quarrel. Her 12 year-old daughter was shot in the head while sheltering in her mother's arms. The little girl died. [2]

Since the 1980s this issue has been the subject of studies by Amnesty International[3] [4], Human Rights Watch and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, who in 2004 reported The legislative and regulatory framework necessary to combat effectively torture and other forms of ill-treatment by law enforcement officials has been put in place; the challenge now is to make sure that all of the provisions concerned are given full effect in practice. [5] and Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan has declared that there will be zero-tolerance of torture in Turkey.
[edit] Deaths in custody
There have been a number of rulings against Turkey in the European Court of Human Rights resulting from deaths in custody in the 1990s [6], a period when this was raised as an issue by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and others. [7], [8] and has been the subject of studies by Dr Başar Çolak of Kocaeli University [9]. In a more recent incident (August 2007) Nigerian footballer Festus Okey was shot by the police while being detained in Beyoğlu police station. Apparently he had tried to wrest the gun from the officer and was shot in the ensuing struggle. The Minister of the Interior Beşir Atalay refused to make a statement saying Questions are asked everywhere, they don't all get a reply[10]
