Bushrangers were criminals who used the Australian bush as a refuge to hide from authorities between committing their robberies, roughly analogous to the British "highwayman". Their targets often included small-town banks or coach services.

- Myall Creek massacre (1838) NSW - massacre of 28 Aborigines
- Maria shipwreck massacre (1840) - murder of all 26 survivors of the brig Maria, along the Coorong coastline. Two aboriginal men were found guilty and publicly executed in front of their tribe by the police after a drumhead court-martial.
- Hornet Bank massacre (1857) - murder and rape of Mrs Fraser, six of her children and three employees by the Yeeman tribe at the Hornet Bank cattle station near Taroom, Queensland
- Fanny Briggs murder (1860) - rape and murder of Rockhampton barmaid by members of the Native Police
- Lambing Flat riots (1860-61) NSW - anti-Chinese violence in goldfields
- Cullin La Ringo massacre (1861) Central Queensland - nineteen white settlers killed by aboriginals. One of the largest mass murders of whites by aboriginals in Australian history.
- Salt Creek Murders (1862) - local publican Malachi Martin murdered Jane Macmanamin, his servant. He was also believed responsible for the suspicious death of the previous publican in 1856, whose widow he later married.

In Australia, life imprisonment is of indeterminate length. The sentencing judge usually sets a non-parole period after which the prisoner can apply for release under parole conditions. In the case of a criminal who has committed particularly heinous crimes, the sentencing judge may recommend that the person is "never to be released".
