Description	Established in 1898 following the intervention by the Great Powers, the island of Crete became an autonomous state of the Ottoman Empire - the Republic of Crete, and lasted until 1913 when the Cretan deputies declared union with Greece. The flag of the autonomous state, as chosen by the Great Powers, depicted the blue and white cross design of Greece, and a red canton with a white five-pointed star to symbolize Ottoman suzerainty. This flag was universally despised by the Greek Cretans, who did not want to be reminded of Ottoman rule.
