Creole is a wiki markup language. The project, which has been brought into being by the people at the Wiki Markup Standard Workshop at the WikiSym2006, aims at creating a common markup language that enables or simplifies the transfer of content across different wikis. The goal was and is to "create a common markup that was not a standardization of an arbitrary existing markup, but rather a new markup language that was created out of the common elements of all existing engines."[1] To achieve this, different existing wiki markups have been analyzed and the most commonly used elements have found their way into the specification.
On July 4th 2007, Version 1.0 (final) of Creole has been released. Since then, the development has been "frozen" for the next two years to allow time for adoption. Despite the freezing, the discussion about good practices in wiki markup design and about possible additions and changes for future versions of the markup continues.
