[edit] Aims
Credit Action is a national money education and debt advocacy charity that aims to generate ‘better thinking about money,’ promoting sensible and effective personal money management. They seek to help people stay in control of their money, rather than let it control them. They aim to help people avoid financial hardship and the pains of over-indebtedness.
Credit Action has a close partnership with the Consumer Credit Counselling Service(CCCS). While Credit Action works on the preventative side of debt problems, CCCS works on the curative side to help those who are struggling with debt or money worries by offering free, independent and confidential advice through their freephone helpline.
They work closely with Government, regulators and the lending industry, featuring widely in the media, to work through the issues surrounding money education and financial literacy.
[edit] Resources
Credit Action produces Moneymanuals to help people manage their money better:
Thinking about money – A money guide to help you learn how to handle money.
Dealing with debt – A practical manual for those struggling with debt.
Moneymanual for Students – A student guide to dealing with finances at university.
Single Parents Guide- A guide made to help single parents with money management.
Training seminars are available for many different group sizes and for many different organisations. Two regularly updated websites are run,Credit Action and Moneybasics, to provide resources, news, independent information and money tips.
The Spendometer - Credit Action's mobile phone budgeting tool - has been one of their particularly innovative ways of helping people. Available for free download from their website, many young people have been interested in budgeting by using their mobile phone.
[edit] History
Credit Action was founded in 1994 by Keith Tondeur with support from the Jubilee Centre, working primarily through the church in the UK. The charity has been growing steadily since its birth. A consequence of this was that in 2002 the charity transferred its debt and money advice helpline over to CCCS as demand was greater than Credit Action could meet. While historical links to the church remain, the charity works across all society.
[edit] Locations
The charity has offices in Lincoln and Bloomsbury, London but works nationwide.
