Creaton
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Creaton is a village and civil parish in the Daventry district of the county of Northamptonshire in England. Located eight miles north west of the city of Northampton, the village has a population of approximately 500.
The village has a mediaeval church (Church of England denomination) with a low stone tower and a brick-built United Reformed chapel. There is a large village green overlooked by houses, some of which are thatched and built of the local sandstone. Hunt meets were frequently held on the green; hunting in the area is now run within the bounds of the current legislation.
The village pub is the Bricklayers Arms, located on the Welford Road (former A50) which runs along the top of the ridge on which the village stands. On the edge of the village is Highgate House, a conference centre and former 17th century coaching inn.
Creaton Hospital (which in fact is part of the neighbouring village of Hollowell), is located at the bottom of the hill on the other side of the Welford Road. This was used to treat tuberculosis sufferers between approximately 1930 and 1950. The site of the hospital is now Highfield Park, a housing development built in approximately 1985.
[edit] Other Information
Amphylis Twigden, an ancestor of George Washington, was born on the outskirts of the village.
