The result of the debate was kept; this way we don't have to have a separate "fair use" image to illustrate his style. —Angr 06:54, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use discussion
The image is a self-portrait of Thompson, and thus not only illustrates his appearance, but also his artistic style and his reason for notability, that of being an artist. I do not think a similar image can be freely and easily sourced that would provide substantially the same information. The key word here is substantial. Whilst the use to illustrate his appearance may be replaced, we would still need an image to illustrate Thompson's art style, and it seems redundant to delete this image and later add another fair use image to the article, when using this image in three uses makes it's fair use claim stronger than other images used for only one or two purposes. - But the fair use tag doesn't allow using copyrighted drawings such as that to illustrate people. --Deskbanana 18:18, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- We're not bound by what the tags state, the tags are merely a guide. However note the tag allows use of the image to critique the technique of the work of art or the work itself. Are we seriously suggesting the work itself is not Craig Thompson, and that Thompson is not the creator and subject of the work. I appreciate what everyone is trying to do in cleaning out a lot of these copyrighted images when used in articles, but there's a fair use case for using this image in the article even if a free image of Thompson himself is added. It illustrates his style of art. Mind, I can just as easily stick a comics tag on it and instantly we can use it to illustrate the subject of the art. I'm not really interested in the process here but rather the fair use of the image. We're discussing fair use criteria one. Can it be replaced by a free image? Can someone source a free image which delineates Thompson's style, illustrates his graphic novel Blankets and illustrates Thompson himself? Until three such free images are found, this image is fair use on at least one of those grounds. Hiding Talk 18:53, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

- Looking over the Wikipedia:Fair use criteria, I feel that this image is appropriate for use on Wikipedia. It contributes significantly to the article; as Hiding said above, it illustrates not just what he looks like, but also his style and his characters. No free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information. A free equivalent could not convey so much information in a free image. --Chris Griswold (☎☓) 21:56, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
