[edit] Synopsis
Following the events of "Lunarville 7", Captain Scarlet, Captain Blue and Lieutenant Green return to the Moon to destroy the Mysteron complex in Crater 101.
[edit] Plot
Arrangements are made between Spectrum and the lunar authorities to destroy the Mysteron complex in Crater 101, on the far side of the Moon, with a nuclear device. However, if there is to be no risk of the Mysterons reconstructing their complex, a volunteer group will first have to locate and remove its power source before the device can be detonated.
Captain Scarlet, Captain Blue and Lieutenant Green agree to carry out the mission and return to the Moon, where they launch their operation from Lunarville 6. Travelling to Crater 101 in a Moonmobile, and transferring to a smaller Lunar Tractor to enter the crater, they are attacked by a number of programmed guard vehicles, but they immobilise the machines by destroying their control vehicle with the Tractor's cannon. Having put on space suits and entered the complex itself, Scarlet, Blue and Green take camera and instrumentation recordings and eventually discover that the power source is a pulsating crystal.
However, the Mysterons have killed and reconstructed Frazer, the Lunarville 6 colonist who has been assigned to transport the nuclear device to Crater 101. Frazer arrives in a Lunar Tank and leaves the device in the crater, but he has set it to explode two hours ahead of the agreed time to ensure the failure of Spectrum's operation and the survival of the complex. Lunarville 6 cannot communicate with the Spectrum officers by radio as they are out of range, so when the controller, Nolan, and another colonist, Schroeder, learn of Frazer's sabotage, they try to warn them by launching a CB29 rocket, which lands in Crater 101.
The rocket prompts Scarlet to recall the description on a lucky charm given to him by Nolan: ten years before, she coordinated the first Neptune-bound CB29 probe to be launched from the Moon, which arrived "ahead of schedule". Remembering this phrase, Scarlet realises that the device will explode early. With only minutes remaining until detonation, Blue and Green return to the Moonmobile with the cameras and instruments and clear the area. Scarlet, meanwhile, is delayed freeing the Mysteron crystal from its machine, but leaves in the Lunar Tractor before the nuclear explosion. Without power, the complex is permanently destroyed in the blast. Scarlet, Blue and Green return to Earth so that the crystal and their other findings may be studied.
