The Crane family is the wealthiest, most prestigious family on the NBC/DirecTV soap opera, Passions. Seated at 14 Raven Hill Road atop Raven Hill in Harmony, New England, the Crane family amassed its fortune during the eighteenth century via the slave trade, amongst other things. The Crane family wealth is now garnered from Crane Industries, a global corporation, which does a number of things, including shipping and fishing. Over the years, the Cranes have intermarried and reproduced with a number of notable families from Harmony and New England, including the Barretts, the Winthrops, the Lopez-Fitzgeralds, the Bennetts, and the Russells.

[edit] History

The affluent and renowned Crane family emigrated from Great Britain in the seventeenth century, eventually settling in the coastal New England village of Harmony over three hundred years ago. The Cranes gained a great deal of influence in village affairs by the end of the century. In 1693, magistrate William Ephraim Crane ordered the execution of accused witch Tabitha Lenox after hearing testimony from the young Prudence Standish; as a result, Tabitha has long since held a grudge against William's descendants.

The Cranes first began to amass their multibillion dollar fortune in the eighteenth century through their participation in the Atlantic slave trade; further wealth was derived in the early twentieth century by illegally smuggling alcohol into the United States during the Prohibition and through other unpalatable activities. In more recent generations, the Cranes' main source of reported income has been derived from Crane Industries, the family-run international conglomerate.

Upon the debut of Passions in July 1999, the Crane family consisted of patriarch Alistair, his two children, Julian and Sheridan, Julian's wife Ivy, and Julian and Ivy's eldest child, Ethan. The Cranes were quickly established to be a dysfunctional bunch; Julian and Ivy, despite over two decades of marriage, bitterly despised one another and never, during their year-and-a-half of marriage seen on-air, engaged in sexual intercourse with one another, and patriarch Alistair sought numerous times to murder Sheridan, his own daughter, and often enlisted Julian's help in achieving his goal.

The Crane family seemed to have largely fallen apart by early 2002 — Ethan, the heir apparent to the empire, was revealed to be the product of Ivy's adulterous affair with police chief Sam Bennett in early 2001, leading Julian to divorce Ivy in August 2001, and Sheridan and Julian were both apparently murdered in August 2001 and January 2002, respectively. Following Julian's murder, Alistair was the only remaining member of the Crane family left until Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald had herself declared the legal Mrs. Julian Crane and took control of Julian's estate. Theresa eventually gave birth to Julian's son, Ethan Martin Crane, in June 2002, and both Julian and Sheridan were later discovered to be alive later that summer. Theresa continued to hold control of much of the Crane estate, however, until her Bermudan wedding to Julian was revealed to have been a practical joke in March 2003.

In 2002, the writers began introducing Julian and Ivy's frequently mentioned but heretofore never seen children into the program's storylines. Julian and Ivy's only son and youngest child, Nicholas Foxworth "Fox" Crane, returned to Harmony in December 2002, followed by his eldest sister, Fancy, in June 2005. Julian and Ivy's third and final child, their youngest daughter, Pretty, returned to Harmony in July 2007 in order to seek revenge against her sister for a fight a decade earlier that had left Pretty's face partially disfigured. Julian and Sheridan each welcomed the birth of children in the following years — Julian had a daughter, Endora Lenox, with Tabitha in July 2003, while Sheridan gave birth to son Marty Lopez-Fitzgerald in September 2003 and then adopted husband Chris Boothe's son, James, in autumn 2006.

Both Alistair and Julian also learned that they had fathered children with other women. When Julian learned that his son with Eve had not died shortly after birth as had been previously believed, the two set out to find their child, and Alistair eventually revealed the boy to be Chad Harris, who was engaged to Eve's eldest daughter, Whitney Russell. In June 2006, however, Chad learned that his biological parents were actually Alistair and Eve's adoptive half-sister, Liz Sanbourne, and Julian and Eve learned in July 2007 that their son was the intersexed Blackmailer that had been terrorizing most of Harmony, Vincent Clarkson. Alistair also discovered in spring 2005 that his one-night stand in the 1970s with then-Harmony harlot Edna Wallace had produced a daughter, Beth.

As of December 2007, the only current Crane family members living in Harmony are Alistair, Theresa, Julian, Sheridan, Vincent, Fancy, Pretty, Endora, and Marty. Chad and Fox were both murdered in August and September 2007, respectively, and Whitney moved with her and Chad's young son, Miles, to New Orleans. Beth was also killed in July 2006 in Rome, and custody of Sheridan's adoptive son, James, rests with the boy's father, Chris.

[edit] Being a "true Crane"

Central to several of the soap's storylines is the concept of being a "true Crane". A true Crane is considered to be a Crane who behaves in the Machiavellian manner of his or her Crane ancestors, ruthlessly and single-mindedly stopping at nothing in order to achieve his or her goals while failing to consider or care about how others will be affected; for example, the Cranes, according to Alistair, have a history of patricide. Alistair Crane can be considered to epitomize the ideal of the true Crane; other characters frequently compare Cranes who act in the manner of a true Crane to Alistair. Alistair himself takes pride in being a true Crane, and his only descendant that he considers to possess these same qualities is his beloved granddaughter and favorite family member, Fancy; somewhat ironically, Fancy is one of the few Cranes to abstain from the nefarious and deceitful schemes for which her family is infamous.

[edit] Inheritance

Due to Alistair's position as one of the most powerful and wealthy men in the world, the contents of his will have frequently factored in significantly to the program's storylines. For many years, Julian was Alistair's heir apparent, but Alistair disinherited Julian in favor of Ethan in 2000 after he grew disgusted with his son's behavior. Ethan did not last long as the heir, however, and was quickly disowned later that year for breaking off his engagement to Gwen Hotchkiss in order to marry Theresa; the revelation that Ethan was Sam Bennett's son removed Ethan from Alistair's will completely.

After years of uncertainty, Alistair adopted his new wife Theresa's son with Julian, Little Ethan, and made the nine-year-old his heir while disinheriting the rest of his family.[1] When Alistair fell into a coma in January 2006, and again when he was believed to have died in July of that year, Theresa, as his wife and Little Ethan's mother, took over control of the Crane empire as a sort of regent. Upon further study of Alistair's will, however, Theresa discovered that, should it be revealed that Little Ethan had been fathered by Ethan and not Julian, Little Ethan would be disinherited and Fancy would become the sole heiress to the Crane fortune.[2]

[edit] James Boothe

James Boothe (born Mark Preston circa 1998) is the adopted son Sheridan Crane Boothe and Chris Boothe. The biological son of Maureen Preston, he was orphaned during the 2005 New England tsunami and taken in by Sheridan, who was drawn to him because he reminded her of her missing son, Marty Lopez-Fitzgerald. Sheridan was made his legal guardian, and, a month later, photographer Christopher Boothe arrived in Harmony, ostensibly to photograph the aftermath of the tsunami, and claimed that little Mark was actually his missing son, James. Chris and Sheridan were married in February 2006, and Sheridan (and, presumably, Chris, in secret) adopted James later that year.

James very much loved both his parents, but Sheridan and Chris's marriage was torn apart by Sheridan's obsession with her ex-fiancé, Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald; Chris left Sheridan in April 2007 and took James. Though Sheridan is still legally James's mother, they have not seen each other since James left Harmony, and according to Chris, Sheridan has had very little contact with James since then.

[edit] Sheridan Crane Boothe

Main article: Sheridan Crane

Sheridan Boothe (née Crane and formerly Lopez-Fitzgerald; born circa 1973) is the daughter of multibillionaire Alistair Crane and his first wife, Katherine. When Sheridan was a young girl, her mother faked her own death, leaving Sheridan to be raised by her malevolent father, who had long resented his young daughter. Alistair sent Sheridan away when she was young, and she grew up longing for someone to love and for someone who could love her back.

Since 1999, Sheridan has been embroiled in a complicated relationship with Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald. The couple were to be married in a double ceremony with Ethan Winthrop and Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald in 2001, but when their co-couple's nuptials fell apart, so did Luis and Sheridan's. Shortly thereafter, Sheridan was presumed dead in a boat explosion and became engaged to Luis's missing brother, Antonio Lopez-Fitzgerald, while suffering from amnesia. She was eventually cured, but, due to Antonio's mystery illness, was forced to wed him in January 2003. Though married to Antonio, Sheridan gave birth to Luis's son, Marty Lopez-Fitzgerald, on September 9, 2003; the boy was kidnapped at birth by Luis's ex-fiancé, Beth Wallace, at birth and presumed dead.

Antonio was murdered in a plane explosion instrumented by Alistair to kill Sheridan in June 2004, leaving Sheridan a widow. Sheridan and Luis took part in a commitment ceremony in Mexico in 2004, but it was not legal as Antonio had not yet been declared legally dead. In June 2005, Luis and Sheridan discovered that Luis and Beth's son, Marty, was really Sheridan's son, as Sheridan had suspected; Beth, who was revealed to be Alistair's illegitimate daughter, escaped the country with Marty after Luis was unable to shoot her, and Sheridan, furious, broke up with him and refused to take him back until he retrieved Marty. Luis was murdered in Morocco late in 2005, however, and Sheridan fell in love with and in February 2006 married Chris Boothe, whose son, James, she had rescued during a tsunami.

Luis turned up alive in March 2006; in order to appease Luis, whom she did not want to upset, Sheridan married him in a bigamist ceremony later that month. Luis was devastated to learn that, again, his marriage to Sheridan was not legal, and he set off to Rome to find Marty and thus win Sheridan back. However, Alistair, Beth, and Marty were all killed in a train crash outside of Rome in July 2006, and Sheridan refused to leave Chris. Luis turned then to Sheridan's niece, Fancy Crane; when Sheridan realized that Luis had actually moved on and fallen in love with Fancy, she quickly shed her sweet, kind persona and became a bitter, vindictive woman bent on destroying Luis and Fancy's relationship, even playing an instrumental role in Fancy's second rape and in Luis's conviction and near-execution for murder. Chris eventually became fed up with his wife's behavior and left her in April 2007, taking James, whom Sheridan had adopted some half-a-year earlier, with him.

Sheridan eventually discovered that her father and son had survived the train crash, and after a three-month search, Alistair returned Marty to her cottage on Christmas Eve 2007. Luis and Sheridan were thrilled to finally have their son back, and Sheridan determined to use her child to win Luis back from Fancy.

Although Sheridan has seemingly become a "true Crane" in her methods to win Luis, Alistair is still against the idea that they could become a couple.

[edit] Vincent Clarkson

Main article: Vincent Clarkson

Vincent Clarkson (born in 1974) is the son of Julian Crane and Eve Russell, conceived from their torrid '70s affair and then kidnapped and placed up for adoption shortly after his birth while his parents were led to believe that he had died as a result of Eve's alcohol and drug use during her pregnancy. Vincent is a hermaphrodite, and suffered through a horrible childhood. As an adult, his grandfather, Alistair, came to manipulate him and use him to further his own evil plans.

Vincent first arrived in Harmony in December 2004 as a woman named Valerie Davis who worked for both Chad Harris-Crane and Fox Crane at Crane Industries. Vincent made his first appearance as himself at Chad and Whitney's wedding around Christmas 2006; he was eventually revealed to be having a clandestine homosexual affair with Chad, who was unaware that he was sleeping with his half-nephew. Vincent was also revealed to be the mysterious half-male, half-female Blackmailer who terrorized Harmony from December 2006 through August 2007, first raping his half-sister, Fancy, twice and framing her boyfriend, Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, for those crimes as well as two counts of murder and arson. He also blackmailed Theresa Crane, threatening to tell her boyfriend, Ethan Winthrop, that her son, Ethan Crane, was also his son if she didn't stay away from Ethan and marry Jared Casey; Vincent was fixated on Ethan, and railroaded Theresa's brothers, Luis and Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald in court, leading to their convictions for crimes that they had not committed. Luis was nearly executed when Eve came forward and admitted that Vincent was her son and was the one behind the crimes, and Vincent was sent to jail, where it was discovered that he had been doing Alistair's bidding. Vincent was presumed dead when his aunt, Sheridan, dropped him off of a cliff in order to save Spike Lester, who had told her that he had information that proved that her son, Marty, was alive.

Vincent survived the fall, however, and revealed that he and Valerie and been one and the same person all along. Furious at his mother for allowing him to be kidnapped as an infant, and also because he was sexually fixated on his father, he began gaslighting her. As Valerie, Vincent slept with Julian and became pregnant with his child. Thus far, only Eve knows that Vincent is alive and is also Valerie.

[edit] Alistair Crane

Main article: Alistair Crane

Alistair Ephraim Crane is a ruthless, multi-billionaire businessman, head of Crane Industries, and the primary villain on Passions. Alistair is generally regarded as being an evil, soulless, sadistic man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. He was married for many years to Katherine Crane (née Barrett), who eventually ran away with Martin Fitzgerald; she bore him two children, Julian and Sheridan Crane. Alistair also fathered another son, the biracial Chad Harris-Crane, through his rape of fourteen-year-old Liz Sanbourne, and another daughter, Beth Wallace, via his one-night-stand with former town slut Edna Wallace. Alistair also adopted Little Ethan, the son of his current wife, Theresa, whom he believed to be his biological grandson, and made him the heir to his fortune.

For the first five years of the program, Alistair's face was unseen; he was largely a background force, and little about his actual character was known, other than the fact that he was evil. In September 2004, Alistair's face was seen for the first time, and he took up a more direct role in making the lives of the citizens of Harmony miserable.

During the first five years of the program when Alistair lacked a face, his most notable scheme was his plan to murder his own daughter, Sheridan, by poisoning her wedding ring, which ultimately failed. Alistair was also responsible for faking Theresa's execution by lethal injection when she confessed to murdering Julian, knowing that Julian was actually alive and would only return to Harmony when he believed his would-be murderer dead. Alistair also disguised himself as a lesbian named Charlie and helped Beth, whom he did not know to be his daughter at the time, kidnap Sheridan and steal her newborn son upon his birth, and was responsible for blowing up the airplane that Sheridan's husband, Antonio Lopez-Fitzgerald, was on, killing him instead of his real target, Sheridan.

After Alistair's face was revealed, he engaged in vendettas against both the Bennett and Lopez-Fitzgerald families; helped Beth escape the country with Luis and Sheridan's son; held Katherine and Gwen and Jane Winthrop hostage at his compound in the North Atlantic; kidnapped and held Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald hostage in Hawaii; and did other dastardly deeds. Alistair's reign of terror started to fall apart late in 2005, when his former fiancée and Katherine's sister, Rachel Barrett, began stalking him. He was eventually stabbed by Liz Sanbourne and fell into a coma; he was moved to a nursing home where he disguised a comatose man as himself and lured the young novice Whitney Russell to Rome, where he stole a chalice from the Vatican and tried to use it to become omnipotent. The plan failed, and he was presumed dead in a train crash outside of Rome along with Beth and Marty.

Alistair and Marty actually survived, however, and Alistair used his grandson, Vincent Clarkson, to torment the people of Harmony. Alistair revealed himself to be alive in August 2007 when he poisoned Ethan Winthrop in an attempt to kill his wife, Theresa, for lying to him about the paternity of her son and shot and killed his own son, Chad, in cold blood. Alistair also teamed up with his granddaughter, Pretty, and had a mind-control device implanted into his other granddaughter Fancy's brain; Fancy had long been his favorite, and Alistair was furious when she turned her back on him and determined to make her act like a "true Crane" again.

[edit] Ethan Crane

Ethan Lopez-Fitzgerald Crane (born June 21, 1996, as Ethan Martin Crane and later known as Ethan Winthrop, Jr.), better known as Little Ethan, is the adoptive son of Alistair and Theresa Crane. Born on-screen in 2002, Little Ethan was believed to be the product of Theresa's drunken fling with Julian Crane. When his mother married Alistair Crane in October 2005, Alistair adopted Little Ethan and named him the heir to the Crane empire, disowning all of his other relatives except Fancy. Alistair began to mold Little Ethan into his image, much to Theresa's dismay.

In June 2006, Theresa found out that her true love, Ethan Winthrop, had fathered her son. Initially thrilled, she became afraid that Ethan and his wife, Gwen, would sue for custody of Little Ethan and decided to keep Little Ethan's paternity a secret, especially after she realized that Little Ethan would cease to be the heir to the Crane empire were it revealed that he was not a Crane by blood. Theresa eventually decided to tell Ethan the truth in 2007, but Gwen and her mother Rebecca blackmailed Theresa by threatening to reveal her mother's explosive secret. Theresa eventually told Little Ethan that Ethan is his father when Little Ethan donated part of his liver to Ethan and Gwen's son, Jonathan, though Ethan himself still does not known that he has two sons.

[edit] Fancy Crane

Fancy Crane (born between December 22 and January 19, 1980) is the eldest daughter and child of Julian Crane and his first wife, Ivy. Fancy is her grandfather Alistair's favorite family member, and she grew up very close to her "grampy". For many years, Fancy was unable to see the malevolent side of her grandfather.

Fancy was first seen in Las Vegas in 2005 and was introduced as a vain, spoiled, stubborn, self-centered heiress and party girl. Despite their initial dislike for one another, Fancy eventually entered a relationship with Noah Bennett, greatly angering her grandfather, who felt that Noah was far "beneath" his precious granddaughter. Fancy disobeyed her grandfather to be with Noah, however, and Alistair used one of his minions, a terrorist named Lena, to break Noah and Fancy apart as a part of his omega plot; Noah and his ex-girlfriend, Maya Chinn, had witnessed Lena's associate, Spike Lester, murder a man in an attic while they were in college, and Noah pretended to cheat on Fancy with Maya in order to protect Fancy from Lena. While broken up, however, Fancy fell for her aunt's ex-fiancé, Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, much to Noah's dismay.

Fancy helped Luis to move on from Sheridan, however, much to Sheridan's chagrin. When Fancy was raped by the Blackmailer (Vincent Clarkson) shortly before Christmas 2006 and believed that he was in her room, Sheridan convinced Luis that alcohol had caused Fancy to hallucinate her attacker's presence, despite the fact that Sheridan had found the button that proved Fancy's story true. Fancy was eventually raped again, but the semen found during the rape kit belonged to Luis. Luis was arrested for both of Fancy's rapes, and later for murdering Rae Thomas and a bartender named Dylan Flood, as well as setting fire to Dylan's apartment. Fancy fought to clear Luis's name, but he was convicted and sentenced to death. Luis was seconds from death when Eve Russell admitted that her son, Vincent, was the real culprit, and Luis was released.

Despite overcoming Luis's death sentence, Luis and Fancy's relationship is still in peril — Alistair had a mind-control device implanted into Fancy's brain, and Fancy's bitter sister, Pretty, who wants Luis for herself and blames Fancy for disfiguring her during a fight when they were teenagers, is using the device to make Fancy act cruelly towards Luis and his son, and Sheridan is using her and Luis's son, Marty, to try to win Luis back.

[edit] Fox Crane

Main article: Fox Crane

Nicholas Foxworth "Fox" Crane (between late 1980 and 1983 — September 17, 2007) was the only son and third child of Julian Crane and his ex-wife, Ivy Winthrop. Fox first arrived in Harmony in December 2002; he was a playboy who had gambled his fortune away after dropping out of university. Bitter and resentful over his parents' favoritism of his older brother, Ethan, Fox eventually became friends with Ethan's ex-fiancé, Theresa, and fell in love with Theresa's best friend, Whitney, coincidentally the daughter of his own father's former flame, Eve Russell. Despite Fox's feelings for Whitney, she only had eyes for her fiancé, Chad Harris. Fox eventually realized that he had to back off and began dating Theresa in 2004. Their relationship lasted only a few months, though, before Theresa broke things off after realizing that she was still in love with Ethan. The two remained friends, and Fox went back to yearning for Whitney.

Whitney and Chad's romance came to a screeching halt when they found out that Chad's parents were none other than Julian and Eve, making Chad both Fox and Whitney's half-brother. Whitney was disgusted and horrified to realize that she had slept with her own brother and was pregnant with his child; in order to protect both the reputations of herself and her unborn child, Whitney began dating Fox and passed the child of as his. Whitney eventually gave birth to a son, Miles, in March 2005, but could not bear to be around the evidence of her sin and used Fox's power of attorney to give the baby up for adoption while Fox was out of town. Fox was devastated and broke up with Whitney; he eventually learned that Miles was not biologically his son.

Fox began dating Kay Bennett and longed to become a family with her and her daughter; the two became engaged, but things became complicated when Kay's ex-flame (and Maria's father) Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald returned to Harmony after a year-and-a-half absence. Kay eventually realized that she was still in love with Miguel and planned to end her engagement to Fox, but Fox, desperate to hold on to Kay, faked being terminally ill so that Kay would not leave him. Fox and Kay were married in January 2007, despite opposition by Miguel and Fox's mother. Ivy eventually accidentally revealed that Fox had never been dying, and Kay left him.

After separating from Kay, Fox began dating Esme Vanderheusen, his sister Fancy's best friend. Fox and Esme believed that they had found true love together, and they had just consummated their relationship when Fox was shot and killed by Esme's fifteen-year-old niece, Viki, on September 17, 2007.

[edit] Julian Crane

Main article: Julian Crane

Julian Linus Crane is the eldest child and son of Alistair Crane and his first wife, Katherine. Alistair raised Julian in his image, and it was too late before Katherine realized her husband's plans to make their son as evil and ruthless as himself. Julian grew up to be a spoiled and amoral man, believing himself to be American royalty as the heir apparent to the Crane empire.

After an affair with Boston jazz singer Eve Johnson, in which he got his young lover hooked on drugs and alcohol and then impregnated and left her, Julian married Ivy Winthrop, daughter of a former governor, as part of a merger between their fathers' companies. Originally amenable during their courtship, Ivy, having discovered on her wedding night that Julian had never loved her, became cold. Still, the couple had four children — Ethan in 1975, Fancy in 1980, Pretty, and Nicholas Foxworth. After Ivy kicked Julian out of her bed following Fox's birth, Julian busied himself with other women.

In 2001, Julian discovered that his son, Ethan, had actually been fathered by Ivy's ex-boyfriend, Harmony Police Chief Sam Bennett. Julian was furious and disowned Ethan and began divorce proceedings against Ivy. He was in Bermuda to finalize his divorce when he was approached by Ethan's fiancée, Theresa, who wanted him to reinstate Ethan as his heir. The two became drunk and ended up wedding and bedding one another. They secretly had their marriage annulled, though the truth eventually came out. Their annulment was voided, however, when Theresa discovered that she was pregnant. At this point, half of the town of Harmony was furious at Julian for one thing or another, and Julian was shot and killed at the Crane Cannery.

While Ivy, Theresa, and Rebecca fought over who was the legal Mrs. Julian Crane, Julian was actually alive and well and disguised as a short-order cook named Peggy, hiding in fear from his would-be-murderer. Julian eventually returned to Harmony after Theresa gave birth to their son, Ethan Martin, in June 2002; Julian later discovered in 2007 that Ethan Winthrop, and not he, had fathered Little Ethan. Julian was miserable as Theresa's husband and was thrilled when their marriage turned out to be a practical joke. Julian became engaged to and married Rebecca in January 2004, but had fallen in love with his ex, Eve. Julian and Eve grew closer, and Eve's husband, TC Russell, eventually found out about their affair thirty years earlier; TC was furious, and divorced Eve later that year.

Julian and Eve began a search for their long-lost son; they were originally told that he was Chad Harris, but later discovered this not to be true. Eventually they found their son to be Vincent Clarkson, the masked half-man, half-woman who had blackmailed half of Harmony in 2007. Vincent, a hermaphrodite, also as an alter ego, Valerie Davis, whom Julian slept with and impregnated late in 2007. Everyone but Eve currently believes Vincent to be dead, however, instead of alive and tormenting his mother. Only Eve knows that Vincent and Valerie are one-and-the-same.

Julian is also the father of Tabitha Lenox's daughter, Endora Lenox, who was born in July 2003. Besides Julian, Tabitha, and Endora, only Alistair, Ivy, and Kay know that Julian is Endora's father. Julian is also aware that Endora is a witch and, realizing that Endora had special needs that he, as a mortal, could not provide for, dropped his suit for custody.

[edit] Pretty Crane

Main article: Pretty Crane

Pretty Crane (born sometime after late 1981) is the youngest daughter and child[3] of Julian Crane and his first wife, Ivy. Pretty was highly competitive with her older sister, Fancy, as a child and teenager; the two girls were once in a physical altercation that left the right side of Pretty's face heavily scarred — Pretty claimed that Fancy, jealous that a boy named Harrison liked her better than Fancy, purposely poured cyanuric acid on her sister's face so that no boy would ever choose Pretty over Fancy again, while Fancy claimed that Pretty had been choking her and she attacked her sister in self-defense and without the knowledge that the bottle she had grabbed contained acid.

Though the show has implied that Fancy's version of events are more accurate, Pretty has hated her sister ever since the accident, blaming Fancy for making it so that no man would ever want to love her. Pretty returned to Harmony in July 2007 when she heard that her sister was preparing to marry Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald; eager to cause her sister as much misery as she had endured over the years, Pretty threatened to tell Luis, who was to be executed shortly thereafter, what Fancy had done, and Fancy, who wanted Luis to die in peace, eventually canceled the nuptials.

After Luis was exonerated, Pretty told Luis what had happened so many years prior, but, to her dismay, Luis didn't break up with Fancy. Furious, Pretty teamed up with her grandfather, who had a mind-control device implanted into Fancy's brain. Together, they used the device to make Fancy act in uncharacteristic ways so that Luis would leave her. Alistair and Pretty also manipulated the situation so that Luis would sleep with Pretty, who had been a virgin; Pretty, touched by Luis's kindness, fell in love with her sister's boyfriend and determined to win him for herself.

[edit] Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald Crane

Theresa Crane (née Lopez-Fitzgerald and previously Casey and Winthrop; born in 1982) first married into the Crane family on August 14, 2001, when she married Julian Crane while drunk. Theresa had been engaged to marry Julian's ex-son, Ethan, and was devastated by the turn of events. Julian and Theresa had their marriage annulled, though Ethan still found out and eventually forgave Theresa. When Theresa discovered that she was pregnant, however, she lied to Ethan once more, and when he found out that she was carrying his ex-father's child, he broke their engagement.

Theresa's pregnancy nullified her annulment to Julian, who had been murdered, and she was able to gain control of his estate. Theresa eventually gave birth to Julian's son, whom she named Ethan Martin Crane, in June 2002, and after she confessed to and was nearly executed for Julian's murder, Julian was revealed to be alive. A few months later, Julian and Theresa's marriage was revealed to be a joke, and Theresa was kicked out of the mansion.

Two-and-a-half years later, in October 2005, Theresa married Alistair Crane, who had promised to help her win back Ethan and their infant daughter, Jane Winthrop, if she married him. Theresa failed to properly read the prenuptial agreement, however, and unknowingly allowed Alistair to adopt her son, Little Ethan. Alistair disowned all of his other relatives and named Little Ethan his sole heir, determined to mold the nine-year-old into his image, much to Theresa's dismay. Her marriage to Alistair was overall unpleasant, as Alistair frequently raped her. Theresa's situation greatly improved when Alistair fell into a coma early in 2006 and Theresa was able to take control of the Empire in Little Ethan's stead. In Rome, Theresa learned that Ethan, and not Julian, had fathered Little Ethan, much to her delight; however, fearing that Ethan and his wife, Gwen, would sue for custody of Little Ethan and that Little Ethan would lose his position as heir to the Crane Empire, Theresa decided to keep her son's paternity a secret.

Alistair was killed in a train crash in July 2006, and Theresa eventually married Ethan in August 2007. However, unbeknownst to the Winthrops, Alistair was alive and well, and discovered that Little Ethan had no Crane blood. Furious, Alistair attempted to murder his treacherous wife but instead poisoned Ethan instead. Alistair and Theresa have seen little of each other since his return from the dead, though Alistair has forbidden Theresa to tell Ethan about Little Ethan, fearing that he would become a laughing stock.

[edit] Chad Harris-Crane

Main article: Chad Harris-Crane

Chad Harris-Crane (May 16, 1974 or 1975August 28, 2007), previously known as Chad Harris, was the son of Alistair Crane and Liz Sanbourne, conceived out of the former's rape of the latter in Boston. Chad was raised as the son of a couple with the surname of Harris in Los Angeles; he ran away once when he was eight, and when he returned home, he found that his parents had gone. Chad was placed into foster care, and, as an adult, entered into the music industry and married a woman named Latoya, from whom he separated sometime before 1999 and finalized his divorce in 2003.

Chad came to Harmony hoping to find his parents, and was later stunned to learn that he had been adopted. He began searching for his biological parents, whom he knew to be a white man and a black woman. Along the way, he began a relationship with Whitney Russell. In 2004, Chad was told that his parents were Julian Crane and Eve Russell, making Whitney his half-sister. Despite this, Chad wanted to stay with Whitney, but Whitney was repulsed and ended their relationship. Unbeknownst to Chad, Whitney was pregnant with his child, a son that she passed off as Fox Crane's. Whitney couldn't bear to be reminded of the fact that she had committed incest, however, and gave the child up for adoption; little Miles Davis was adopted by none other than Chad, who hoped to use the boy to win Whitney back. Whitney joined a convent, however, and Chad began a homosexual affair with Vincent Clarkson, a man he had met in a bar.

Chad eventually learned that Alistair and Liz, and not Julian and Eve, were his parents, and that Liz had been adopted, making Whitney only his adoptive half-cousin. Thrilled, Chad and Whitney reunited and married in December 2006. Chad continued his affair with Vincent, however, and Whitney, who had revealed shortly beforehand that she was expecting their second child, was disgusted and horrified when she discovered the truth. The two separated, and Chad broke things off with Vincent once and for all. Chad later discovered that Vincent was Julian and Eve's son, meaning that he had slept with his own half-nephew.

Chad and Whitney heard Theresa's cries for help after Alistair poisoned Ethan and rushed to the room, where Alistair held them at gunpoint. Chad taunted Alistair, telling his father that he would never shoot his own son, and, proving him wrong, Alistair casually shot Chad in the chest. Chad died in Whitney's arms on August 28, 2007, and Whitney, devastated, moved to New Orleans with Miles.

[edit] Miles Harris-Crane

Main article: Miles Harris-Crane

Miles Davis Harris-Crane (born Miles Davis Harris on March 23, 2005) is the eldest child and son of Chad and Whitney Harris-Crane. When he was born, his parents believed that they were half-siblings and that Miles was therefore the product of incest. Whitney, horrified by her sin, first tried to pass Miles off as Fox Crane's son, then gave Miles up for adoption, only for the baby to be adopted by Chad. Chad eventually learned that he was Miles's biological father, and Whitney joined a convent. After Chad and Whitney discovered that they were not siblings, however, Whitney left the convent and returned to Harmony, where she and Chad were married in December 2006.

Whitney discovered that she was pregnant in May 2007, shortly before finding out that Chad had been cheating on her with Vincent Clarkson, her half-brother. Whitney was disgusted and moved back into her parents' house with Miles. Before Chad and Whitney could work out their problems, Chad was murdered in August 2007. Whitney was devastated and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, with Miles and her unborn child on September 6, 2007.

[edit] Endora Lenox

Endora Lenox (born July 28, 2003) is the only child of Julian Crane and Tabitha Lenox. Despite being a four-year-old half-mortal, Endora is an incredibly powerful witch, capable of magic that not even her mother can perform anymore. Besides Julian, Tabitha, and Endora, only Alistair, Ivy, and Kay know that Endora is Julian's daughter. For a while, Julian had sought custody of his daughter, but after discovering her magical nature he came to realize that he could not adequately care for her and dropped his suit.

[edit] Marty Lopez-Fitzgerald

Martin "Marty" Lopez-Fitzgerald (born September 9, 2000) is the only child of former supercouple Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald and Sheridan Crane, born on-screen in 2003. He was kidnapped at birth by his deranged half-aunt, Beth Wallace, and passed off as her son with Luis; Luis and Sheridan did not learn the truth until June 2005. The couple attempted to retrieve their son, but Beth and Marty fled the country with Alistair's help. Luis tracked his ex-girlfriend and son for several months until he was captured and held prisoner in Hawaii by Alistair around October 2005, but he did not come face-to-face with them again until he was rescued and tracked them to Rome in May 2006. Marty was presumed dead twice there, once in a taxi crash in June and again in a train crash in July along with Alistair and Beth.

In August 2007, Spike Lester, in a desperate attempt to save his own life, confessed to Sheridan that Marty was still alive. Once she was able to convince him that it wasn't a hoax, Luis and Sheridan began searching for their son, eventually finding that he was somewhere in Harmony. Their search began to look hopeless when Alistair returned Marty to Sheridan's cottage on Christmas Eve 2007, much to Luis and Sheridan's joy. Marty is thrilled to be home with his parents, but is deathly afraid that Alistair will kidnap him again and doesn't want to leave his father and father.

[edit] Beth Wallace

Main article: Beth Wallace

Beth Wallace (circa 1973 — July 17, 2006) was the daughter of #Alistair Crane and Edna Wallace. Beth was high school sweethearts with Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, who was forced to break up with her in order to care for his family after his father and older brother ran off. Beth carried a torch for Luis for years and was thrilled when they rekindled their romance while Sheridan was presumed deceased in 2002. When Sheridan turned up alive, Luis broke up with Beth, causing the once-kind young woman to snap. When Sheridan became pregnant with Luis's child, Beth kidnapped her and held her captive in a pit in her basement, eventually taking her son, Marty, and passing him off as her own son with Luis and making Sheridan believe that her baby had died.

Beth eventually discovered in 2005 that Alistair Crane was her father; Alistair found Beth a bit crazy, but was happy that she was causing Sheridan so much misery. When Luis and Sheridan realized that Marty was their son, Alistair helped Beth escape the country with Marty. Luis eventually caught up with them in Rome, where Beth was killed in a train crash; Alistair and Marty were eventually both believed deceased as well, but were eventually revealed to be alive.

[edit] Rachel Barrett

Rachel Barrett was once the fiancé of Alistair Crane and is the beautiful and free-spirited older sister of Katherine Crane. Alistair claimed to deeply love Rachel, and she him, but Rachel discovered Alistair's true nature and tried to break of their engagement; as a result, Alistair faked Rachel's death in a boating accident and held her captive for years in Hawaii. Rachel eventually escaped and faked her death, fleeing to Montana for a while. Eventually, Rachel returned to Harmony disguised in a white cape and bearing blood-red fingernails; she sought to get her revenge against Alistair by stabbing him. Liz Sanbourne beat her to the punch, but Rachel did attempt to kill Alistair by injecting him with a chemical used to euthanize animals.

Rachel gave her niece information that sent Sheridan to Hawaii in search of Beth and Marty; Rachel hovered around canvas for a while before dropping off-screen.

Rachel was portrayed by Sharon Wyatt on a contract basis from December 30, 2005April 3, 2006.

[edit] Chris Boothe

Main article: Christopher Boothe

Christopher Matthew Boothe (allegedly born Greg Walton in South Africa) is the estranged husband of Sheridan Crane. They met in August 2005 when he arrived in Harmony to photograph the aftermath of the previous month's tsunami and supposedly realized that Sheridan's young ward, Mark Preston, was actually his missing son, James; in actuality, Chris had been hired by Sheridan's father to distract her from Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald. After Luis's death in October 2005, Chris and Sheridan grew closer, eventually marrying in February 2006. They soon discovered that Luis was alive, and shortly thereafter discovered that Sheridan and Chris were expecting a child. Luis took off to look for his and Sheridan's son, Marty, believing that Sheridan would leave Chris if he found Marty. Marty was "killed" in a train crash, however, and Sheridan suffered a miscarriage. Sheridan decided to stay with her husband and adopted James, but when Luis began to move on with her niece, Fancy, Sheridan was furious and became obsessed with tearing Luis and Fancy apart. Chris eventually reached his breaking point and left his wife in April 2007, taking James with him.

[edit] Katherine Barrett Crane

Main article: Katherine Crane

Katherine Crane (née Barrett) was the first wife of Alistair Crane. After her older sister, Rachel, was supposedly killed in a boating accident, it became Katherine's duty to marry Alistair. Alistair was a cruel man, often beating and raping Katherine. Early in their marriage, they had a son, Julian Linus; Katherine was too young and naïve to realize that Alistair planned to warp their son into his image until it was too late. Sometime around 1973, Katherine gave birth to the couple's second child, a daughter named Sheridan. Katherine loved her children, but she eventually realized that she could no longer take Alistair's cruelty and ran away with one of Alistair's employees, Martin Fitzgerald. They had their appearances surgically altered and lived for many years in Puerto Arena, Mexico, in the same inn that Martin's sister-in-law, Maria Lopez, ran and lived in with her two sons and Martin and Pilar's daughter, Paloma Lopez-Fitzgerald.

Katherine returned to Harmony with Martin and Paloma in 2004, and her family eventually realized that she was alive after all. Katherine was saddened when Martin went back to his wife, but eventually decided to fight for Martin. Martin and Pilar were set to renew their vows when Pilar realized that Martin and Katherine had slept together, and she called off the wedding; she later asked for a divorce, and Martin and Katherine left Harmony together sometime in late 2006.

[edit] Kay Bennett Crane

Main article: Kay Bennett

Kathleen Elizabeth Crane (née Bennett; born in 1983) is the widow of Fox Crane. The two were married in January 2007 after a year-and-a-half of dating; though their relationship began well, by the time of their marriage, Fox was pretending to be fatally ill so that Kay would marry him and refrain from leaving him for her ex, Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald. Kay eventually discovered Fox's treachery, however, and left him in July 2007. Though divorce proceedings had been begun, they had not been finalized by the time of Fox's death on September 17, 2007, making Kay a Crane widow and entitled to a large sum of money.

[edit] Rebecca Hotchkiss Crane

Main article: Rebecca Hotchkiss

Rebecca Crane (formerly Hotchkiss) is the latest ex-wife of Julian Crane. Rebecca is a nymphomaniacal golddigger, and, before Julian was reformed sometime after his attempted murder, the two worked very well together. They were first married on December 7, 2001, though their marriage was later invalidated when it was revealed that Theresa was pregnant with Julian's child, invalidating their annulment and making their marriage legal. After Julian and Theresa's wedding was proven to have been a practical joke gone awry, Julian and Rebecca became engaged again and were married on January 2, 2004, despite the fact that Julian had fallen in love with his ex, Eve Russell; Rebecca blackmailed Julian into going through with the ceremony and refused to grant him a divorce until mid-2006, when they were mentioned to be divorced.

Though Julian and Rebecca are no longer married, Rebecca still lives in the mansion and still occasionally lusts after Julian.

[edit] LaToya Harris

LaToya Harris[4] is the ex-wife of Chad Harris. The two were married sometime in the 1990s when Chad lived in Los Angeles and was an aspiring music producer. When Chad told LaToya that he wanted to move to Harmony in order to search for his parents, the Harrises, LaToya refused to move and leave her family and friends, and they separated, though LaToya never signed the divorce papers.

LaToya and Chad next met in 2003 when Chad and Whitney were vacationing in Los Angeles. Chad had never told Whitney that he'd been married, and LaToya threatened to kill Whitney for sleeping with her husband. Whitney was furious with Chad for lying to her, and she left him. Chad and LaToya finalized their divorce, and Chad returned to Harmony to reconcile with Whitney.

LaToya was portrayed by Jennia Fredrique.

[edit] Whitney Russell Harris-Crane

Main article: Whitney Russell

Whitney Harris-Crane (née Russell; born in 1982) is the widow of Chad Harris-Crane. The two were married at Christmastime in 2006 after dating for four years (and having known each other for three years previously) and having a son, Miles, together in March 2005. Whitney and Chad's marriage seemed to be going well; in May 2007, Whitney discovered that she and Chad would be having a second child. Both were thrilled, but everything fell apart when Whitney discovered that Chad had been having an affair with her half-brother, Vincent. Whitney took Miles and moved back into her parents' house; before she and Chad would work things out, he was murdered in August 2007. Devastated, Whitney and Miles moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, early in September 2007, where she plans to give birth to her second child.

[edit] Antonio Lopez-Fitzgerald

Antonio Brian Lopez-Fitzgerald (May 7, early 1970sJune 24, 2004) is the late husband of Sheridan Crane. Antonio and Sheridan first met when he rescued her from the ocean after her boat exploded; she suffered from amnesia and both were unaware that she had been engaged to his brother. Brian and Diana, as they were known, became engaged and returned to Harmony to introduce her to his family; Sheridan then remembered her true identity, but could not tell Antonio that she was in love Luis because he was suffering from an unnamed illness and would die if he experienced a shock of any sort. As a result, Sheridan was forced to marry Antonio on January 9, 2003, though Sheridan slept with Luis during their marriage and eventually became pregnant with and gave birth to his son, whom Antonio believed to be his own son. Marty was kidnapped at birth and presumed dead, however, so Antonio never knew that Marty was actually his nephew.

Sheridan eventually told Antonio that she was leaving him for Luis; Antonio tried to force her onto a plane away from Harmony, but eventually relented and let her go. Antonio stayed on the plane, which exploded over the Atlantic Ocean; Alistair had planted a bomb on board in an attempt to kill Sheridan. Antonio was declared legally dead later in 2004.

[edit] Ethan Winthrop

Main article: Ethan Winthrop

Ethan Winthrop (born Ethan Crane on or between March 1 and June 21, 1975[5][6]) is the son of Sam Bennett and Ivy Winthrop. Ivy became pregnant with Ethan on her wedding night to Julian and, when Sam left Harmony, Ivy decided to pass their son off as Julian's. Because he was Sam's son, Ivy favored Ethan over her younger three children, and Julian favored Ethan because he was his heir apparent. In 2001, a tabloid revealed that Ethan had been fathered by Sam and not Julian, crushing both Ethan and Julian and stunning Sam. Julian was furious at Ivy and, in his fury, decided to punish Ethan, too; he disowned the boy he'd raised as his son for nearly twenty-six years. Ethan and Sam's relationship was rocky early on, and Ethan decided to change his surname from Crane to Winthrop instead of Bennett.

[edit] Harrison Winthrop

Harrison Winthrop is the late father of Ivy Winthrop and the grandfather of Ethan, Fancy, Fox, and Pretty. The one-time governor of the New England state in which Harmony is located, Harrison conspired with Alistair to force Julian and Ivy to marry as a way of merging Harrison's fishing business with Crane Industries. Ivy was furious at her father for making her believe that Sam Bennett had stopped loving her but decided to stay married to Julian regardless.

[edit] Helen Revere-Mott-Beaton Winthrop

Helen Winthrop (née Revere-Mott-Beaton) is the late mother of Ivy Winthrop and the grandmother of Ethan, Fancy, Fox, and Pretty. A wealthy socialite and member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Helen was a descendant of Paul Revere on her mother's side.

[edit] Ivy Winthrop

Main article: Ivy Winthrop

Ivy Winthrop (formerly Crane; born in 1956) is the ex-wife of Julian Crane. The two were married in 1974 when Ivy was only eighteen and a recent high school graduate; Ivy was deeply in love with Sam Bennett, but believed that he had abandoned her. As part of their courtship, Julian had convinced Ivy that he loved her, and Ivy decided to marry Julian and let his love be enough for the both of them. On their wedding night, however, Ivy discovered that Julian had never loved her, and, distraught, she fled to Sam. The two quickly discovered that they had been manipulated by Ivy and Julian's fathers, and they had sex. The next morning, however, Alistair and Harrison convinced Ivy not to leave Julian, and Ivy reluctantly stayed with Julian. Ivy had become pregnant with Sam's child, however, and decided to pass him off as Julian's, securing a place for Sam's child within the Crane dynasty. Ivy eventually gave birth to a son, Ethan Crane, in 1975, and heavily favored him over her three children with Julian — Fancy, Nicholas Foxworth, and Pretty.

In early 2001, a tabloid known as Daily Private Lives revealed that Sam and not Julian had fathered Ethan. All three men were furious at Ivy, who found herself socially disgraced. Julian and Ivy were divorced in August 2001.
