Craigieburn is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Hume. Craigieburn is always under constant development, be that of Delfin or Stockland, or even the council. Craigieburn ranges from halfway down Bridgewater Road to up on Mt Ridley. It is slowly becoming more and more urbanised, and is slowly making its way further north. Most of the area is more than 200 metres above sea level (with Mount Ridley being the northernmost hill in northwestern metropolitan Melbourne), giving it clear views of Melbourne's central business district 25 km away.

Craigieburn’s first people were the Wurundjeri Indigenous people. The first non-indigenous settlers were mostly Scottish. Nowadays it is a multicultural melting-pot.

Craigieburn takes its name after an old bluestone inn that catered for travellers along the Old Hume Highway between Sydney and Melbourne. The Old Hume Highway still exists, albeit in a state of disrepair, and nowadays is a continuation of Mickleham Road.

Craigieburn differs immensely from most other suburbs in Hume City Council, most likely attributable to its status as a country town in the Shire of Bulla up until the early 1990s.

Craigieburn's population, in June 2001, was 15,302. 76% of Craigieburn's residents are Australian born (Hume's average is 65%), while there is a noticeable absence of residents born in the Middle East, compared to the rest of Hume. According to the ABS 2001 Census, Turkey, Iraq and Lebanon are the 2nd, 5th and 6th most common places of birth (respectively) in Hume, while Turkey is the 9th most common place of birth in Craigieburn, with Iraq and Lebanon not mentioned.

Italian is the most common language, besides English, spoken at home in Craigieburn. English is exclusively spoken in 76% of homes in Craigieburn, compared to Hume's average of 60%. There is also an increase in Singhalese, due to a lot of Sri Lankan people moving to the area.

Craigieburn has a slightly higher rate of residents with no religious affiliation (15%) compared to Hume's average (11%). 40% of Craigieburn's residents are Catholic, 14% Anglican. While Islam is the second most practiced religion in Hume (12%), it is the 5th most practiced religion by Craigieburn residents, with only 2.9%. Like the rest of Hume, Craigieburn has a negligible Jewish presence.

The suburb includes a gym complete with a swimming pool, as well as basketball and squash courts. Tennis courts, football and cricket grounds are located nearby. There is an 18 hole public golf course which is overlooked by the Craigieburn Sporting Club. There is a Basketball and Football team both called Craigieburn Eagles. The Football team is apart of the EDFL.

Craigieburn is home to the Craigieburn Grasslands, and the countryside is generally open fields and meadows dotted with Gum Trees. Giant River Red Gums flourish along the banks of the two Creeks, The Aitken and The Malcolm that flow through Craigieburn into the Merri Creek. Recently, yellow breasted rosellas and cockatoos have moved in to the area.

Craigieburn Shopping Plaza is located on Craigieburn Road West. There is also the North Pole Christmas Tree Farm and the Reserve Bank Note Printing Works.

A 24 hour Police Station and a Fire Station are located near the Our Lady's Primary School and the Craigieburn Football Ground. There is also a Craigieburn Youth Center located behind the Library.

[edit] Residential areas

Highlands Craigieburn, a residential area by Stockland, has been growing. Formally known as Mickleham Grand, it used to range from Mt Ridley Road to Crestmont Terrace, but now is connected to the urbanised areas of Craigieburn. It is soon to have an addition of schools and many more parks. Other estates include Fairways Village, Creekwood Estate, Hamilton Park and Woodland Grove.

There are four Primary schools and one Secondary school. Craigieburn South and Secondary is one school, divided into Prep-6 and 7-12. Our Lady's Primary is the only Catholic school in Craigieburn.

The electrified railway service to Craigieburn station was opened on the 30th of September 2007. Craigieburn was previously serviced by 5 car diesel locomotives and Sprinter Railcars on the Seymour / Albury line. The previous terminus was Broadmeadows.

Bus services run every 30 minutes from North Craigieburn to South Craigieburn (533). A bus from Craigieburn to Broadmeadows also runs via Roxburgh Park (544) and a bus that runs from Craigieburn to Broadmeadows via Upfield is also available (532).
