Craftsbury Academy

The local school system in Craftsbury, Vermont serves grades K-12 in a campus that includes several buildings, both historic and modern. The schools are situated in historic Craftsbury Vermont, a small town on the southern tip of Orleans County. The main campus is located on Craftsbury Common, though the school system maintains an elementary school in the village nearby.

Chris Young is the principal.

[edit] Craftsbury Elementary School

The elementary school has two sections. Grades kindergarten through four are housed in a small school in the nearby Craftsbury Village, located about one mile from the main campus on Craftsbury Common. These students are bused to the main campus for announcements on Monday mornings and gym class. Grades five and six are located on the main campus in the newer Minden Hall, where they are team taught by two teachers who divide the traditional academic disciplines between them. Though technically part of the elementary school these grades function as a separate unit.

Grades seven through twelve are considered the Academy. Grades seven and eight are treated as a middle school, and grades nine through twelve are considered the high school. These two units function separately in most respects but occasionally come together for special events and activities. These grades are dispersed throughout the main campus. The academy draws tuition students from nearby towns in addition to serving local students in grades seven through twelve. There were eleven graduates in 2007.[2]

[edit] Campus Resources

The local school system maintains an elementary school in the village (see above), but the bulk of the buildings making up the campus are clustered on the east side of Craftsbury Common.

The Academy building is the oldest structure, having been built in the late 1870s. The old Academy building now has several classrooms upstairs, and contains the administrative offices downstairs. Also downstairs are the kitchen and the common room, which is a large room which serves as a meeting hall for various purposes.

To the rear of the academy building is the gymnasium, now several decades old but still much younger than the Academy building. The gymnasium includes a built in stage, under which is the music room. The stage is really a multi-purpose area, serving as a lunchroom, locker room, and break room for the students in addition to its intended role as a stage.

On the opposite end of the gym is a chapel which was moved across the town to its present location. The old chapel serves as additional classroom space, and also hosts the locker rooms for the athletic program.

Just north of this complex is Minden Hall, which was built on site after part of the previous structure was moved onto a new foundation nearby on the common. Minden hall was built in 1989[3] as an auxiliary to the Academy complex. Downstairs in Minden Hall is a library, computer lab, and three classrooms. Upstairs in the same hall are the science labs and support services.

A few buildings to the south is the Industrial Arts building, which hosts the woodshop and art rooms.
