[edit] History
Founding:
In February 2000, General Motors, Ford, DaimlerChrysler founded "NewCo" as an independent online automotive exchange. Shortly after its announcement, Renault and Nissan joined. The original vision was to create the world's largest online marketplace where the OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and their supply base would perform business activities using online catalogs, sourcing, auctions, supply chain management, portals, and other collaborative applications. Business would be conducted through a single online environment using one user ID and password.
On May 16, 2000, NewCo was officially renamed Covisint to reflect the fusion of Communication, Vision, and Integration. The company's world headquarters was located in Southfield, Michigan in the United States.
Selling of Covisint:
Covisint's sourcing and services business was sold to FreeMarkets in January, 2004 while the remaining online messaging, portal, and identity management portions were sold to Detroit-based Compuware Corporation in February, 2004. The company's software and employees have since been folded into Compuware's suite of offerings as Covisint, a susidiary of Compuware.
Current State:
Since becoming part of Compuware, Covisint continues to provide and expand EDI, portals, and identity management services to the automotive community, including significant ongoing business with the original stakeholders. The company is also moving beyond its automotive roots and into additional verticals such as healthcare and government. In the healthcare space, Covisint provides healthcare IT on a software-as-a-service basis to exchange information and provide real-time support to the healthcare industry. Recent uses of the Covisint healthcare platform include maintaining a physician portal for an Independant Physicians Association, providing electonic-based solution for paper-based processes, such as diagnostic ordering, and providing a secure identity management framework for RHIOs to enable safe medical record sharing. For governments, Covisint's technologies enable the safe and secure distribution of homeland security information to various government organizations and security entities.
Covisint is currently located in the Compuware World Headquarters in Detroit, Michigan.
