Covington is a city located on the western edge of Fountain County, Indiana. The population was 2,565 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Fountain County[3].

(40.140518, -87.393106)According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.0 km²), all of it land. It is bounded on the West by the Wabash River and on the South by Interstate 74.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,565 people, 1,092 households, and 714 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,196.1 people per square mile (846.5/km²). There were 1,175 housing units at an average density of 1,006.0/sq mi (387.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.75% White, 0.04% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.23% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.51% of the population.
There were 1,092 households out of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 31.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.79.
In the city the population was spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $40,432, and the median income for a family was $48,792. Males had a median income of $32,313 versus $24,079 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,776. About 3.6% of families and 7.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.1% of those under age 18 and 7.5% of those age 65 or over.
