[edit] History

Covenant Eyes was founded in March 2000 by Ronald DeHaas. It offers both accountability and filtering sofware for computers.

The inspiration behind the name "Covenant Eyes" comes from the book of Job in the Bible. Job 31:1a[1] states, "I have made a covenant with my eyes." In this Bible passage the main character, Job, is defending his moral integrity to his comforters who are accusing him of possible transgression. Job stresses the covenant he made with his eyes not to gaze upon a young woman in lust.

In July 2007, Covenant Eyes released content-control software for PCs.

In late 2007 Covenant Eyes moved office locations from Corunna, MI, to 1525 W. King St. Owosso, MI.

[edit] Concept of accountability software

Covenant Eyes "pioneered this concept" of accountability software. "Internet accountability" is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions on the Internet. Accountability software monitors Internet use on a personal computer, or Internet use by a specific user on a computer. These software applications then generate reports of Internet use, usually viewable to a third party (sometimes called an "accountability partner"), that account for an individual’s Internet browsing.

The concept behind the Covenant Eyes "Internet accountability" service is that "a person will learn to be more careful and responsible surfing the Internet (gain Internet Integrity) if they know they are answerable or accountable for their Internet activity to one or more 'other people.'"[2]

Today there are several accountability software providers. This software primarily appeals to those who wish to avoid viewing Internet pornography and has been used widely in sexual/pornography addiction circles.

[edit] Concept of Content-Control/Filtering Software

Content-control software, also known as censorware or web filtering software, is a term for software designed and optimized for controlling what content is permitted to a reader, especially when it is used to restrict material delivered over the Internet. Content-control software determines what content will be available on a particular machine or network; the motive is often to prevent persons from viewing content which the computer's owner(s) or other authorities may consider objectionable. Common use cases of such software include parents who wish to limit what sites their children may view from home computers, schools performing the same function with regard to computers found at school, and employers restricting what content may be viewed by employees while on the job.
