Template talk:Country IOC alias RUS
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hello, I see that this started as Russia and has been changed to "Russian Federation" twice before being reverted. Sam Vimes commented in his change that all TV screens show "Russian Federation", but I don't think he has seen TVs in all the different countries. They don't say "Russian Federation" in the U.S. or Canada. I doubt they use "Russian Federation" in the UK, Ireland, or Australia, either. What is certain is that spelling out "Russian Federation" disrupts the medal table, which is why the major English-language sources list the teams as "Russia" in the medal tables.
BBC, The New York Times, and CNN all use Russia in their coverage of the Olympics, as can be seen by clicking through the links.

- OK, I think this is a case where most common usage trumps official name. Thanks for doing all the legwork. (Still - during the team pursuit speed skating today Russian Fed. or Russian Federation was consistently shown as the name of the team...even on Eurosport) Sam Vimes 20:14, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
