[edit] Number of the Ten?

Goes from 10 to 17 by adding 2 (Doge & (wife?))? I take it there were some other people in here, but not sure whom, or how they got there.
How did they handle Capi's getting sick/dying, or having business elsewhere during their terms?
I assume that Capis rotated, as there were 36 slots to fill during the year, and only 10-15 people to fill them.

  1. We get 17 by taking the original 10, and adding the Doge (1), plus 6 members of the Signoria of Venice (the Minor Consiglio, if I'm not mistaken).
  2. I'm not sure if any of the Capi died in office; and anything short of a fatal illness would probably have been considered secondary to the interests of the state.
  3. Yes, I believe the position rotated.
