Courtney Brown (born February 10, 1984 in San Francisco, California) is an American football free safety for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. He played college football at Cal Poly.
Brown was selected in the 7th round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys as the 212th player chosen. He attended college at Cal Poly, a Division I-AA school, and started for the Mustangs for four years. Courtney is reported to have run a 4.39 40 yard dash by Scouts Inc and ran a 4.32 40 at his Pro Day work out at San Jose State before the draft.
Brown started as a true freshman in 2002 as a wide receiver and caught nine passes for 139 yards. He moved to cornerback in 2003 where he started six of eight games he appeared.
Brown finished the 2003 season with 16 tackles, two interceptions and one pass break up. He sustained a season ending knee injury one game into the 2004 season. He intercepted seven passes in the 13 games started of the 2005 season breaking up 12 passes and recording 44 total tackles. He played in 11 games in 2006 intercepting one pass, breaking up seven, and recording 51 tackles.
Brown has little or no experience in either punt or kickoff returns.
Although being projected to be drafted as early as the 4th round, Brown dropped into the seventh round possibly due to playing in Division I-AA. He appears to be fully healed from his knee injury. His speed and size are expected to give Brown a good chance to earn a spot on the 53 man roster of the Dallas Cowboys. During the Cowboys' 2007 training camp, head coach Wade Phillips moved Brown to free safety because of an already deep corps of cornerbacks and because of agility issues.
