The Coupe de la Ligue, the French League Cup is an elimination cup competition organised by the Ligue de Football Professionnel. The winner has qualified for the UEFA Cup since 1995. Unlike the Coupe de France, only professional clubs can qualify.
In the new formula used in 2006-07 season, a bye for the second round was given to the two best teams of the last Ligue 1, "to let them concentrate on Champions league". The formula showed that the bye helps a lot: these two clubs, Olympique Lyonnais and Girondins de Bordeaux, finally met in the final after their eliminations before Champions League quarterfinals.
