[edit] Landmarks and points of interest
Sunrise Highway, the northern portion of Route S1, is considered one of the best scenic drives in San Diego County. It runs along the eastern edge of Cleveland National Forest at an average elevation of 6000 feet. In several locations along the route, steep canyons drop down thousands of feet to Colorado Desert floor. Region adjacent to Sunrise Highway is among few areas in San Diego County that develop snow cover during the winter.
Along the road are several campgrounds and picnic areas:
- Wooded Hills Campground
- Burnt Rancheria Campground
- Desert View Picnic Grounds
- Horse Heaven Campground
- Laguna/El Prado Campground
- Foster Lodge (Sierra Club)
- Al Bahr Shrine Camp
- Pioneer Mail Picnic Grounds
The road affords magnificent views to the east, the direction of sunrise, whence the name.
