[edit] Route description
[edit] Crooked Hill Road
Suffolk CR 13 begins at Suffolk CR 4 (Commack Road), just south of the Long Island Motor Parkway, then crosses under the Long Island Expressway between Exits 52 and 53, but has no ramps to or from the main road. Instead, the only access is to service roads that lead to the expressway westbound and from the expressway eastbound. After the terminus of the eastbound service road, it climbs the hill, which bears its name.
Crooked Hill Road was originally southbound Exit S1 on the Sagtikos State Parkway. A traffic circle also existed at the southbound ramps to and from the parkway.[2] When the Long Island Expressway was constructed, the southbound off-ramp was eliminated, but the on-ramp was left intact. The reconstruction of the Long Island Expressway-Sagtikos Parkway interchange from 1988-1991 revived a southbound connection from the parkway to Crooked Hill Road via Exit S1 W. Today and as always, Crooked Hill Road is also accessible from Exit S2, which connect to roads within the grounds of the Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center, including Suffolk CR 106 (Community College Drive).
[edit] Fifth Avenue
After the intersection with Suffolk CR 7 (Wick's Road), County Road 13 makes a more direct north-south direction as Fifth Avenue. Immediately it intersects with Suffolk CR 100 (Suffolk Avenue), the Main line of the Long Island Rail Road, and Long Island Avenue, before passing by the Entenmman's bakery factory.
As Suffolk CR 13 enters North Bay Shore it approaches the interchange with Heckscher State Parkway at Exits 42 N-S. It then intersects Brook Avenue, which leads to a shopping mall along Sunrise Highway then loops back toward an important segment of Third Avenue. Suffolk CR 13 moves over the main road and service roads of New York State Route 27 at Exit 43, which is a cloverleaf intersection, and immediately encounters Suffolk CR 57(Howell's Road).
[edit] Suffolk County Road 13A
At the intersection of Reil Place all southbound traffic along SCR 13 shifts to a parallel street called Clinton Avenue. This segment is designated Suffolk County Road 13A. North of this switch, Clinton Avenue runs parallel to Fifth Avenue as a two way street, until the intersection with Joseph Avenue, only to be cut off by the interchange with Sunrise Highway. Both SCR 13 and 13A intersect with Suffolk CR 50(Union Boulevard) before terminating at New York State Route 27A. Incidentally, Suffolk County Department of Public Works was planning to split Route 27A in Bay Shore, during the 1960's and 1970's.
