County Road 612 (Indian River County, Florida)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

County Road 612 is an east-west street just south of Vero Beach, Florida, formerly known as State Road 612. It is a 2.8-mile-long route that is locally known as Glendale Avenue. The western terminus is an intersection with Cleamann Avenue/43rd Avenue (CR 611); the eastern terminus is an intersection with US 1 (SR 5) just east of Old Dixie Highway (former SR 605).

When Glendale Avenue was first constructed, its primary purpose is to provide access to the orange groves) of Indian River County. In the decades since then, the groves on both sides of the road have yielded to residential developments built to accommodate the growing Vero Beach area population.

In the mid-1970s, Florida Department of Transportation redesignated SR 612 as a secondary State Road, starting a sequence of events that resulted in Glendale Avenue being returned to Indian River County control and maintenance. This was part of a statewide system of redesignation that transformed the map of Florida by the mid 1980s. Southern Florida was most particularly affected.
