"Country Sunshine" is the name of a popular Country Music song and commercial, made popular by Dottie West in 1973.

[edit] History

The song "Country Sunshine" had originally been released as a commercial for the Coca Cola company. In 1968, Dottie West had written a song "Country Girl" to be in one of their commercials. The song ultimately went on to become a top twenty Country hit for west. The Coca Cola company had been wanting to make a series of "Country-themed" commercials. They thought Dottie West would be the best choice to write songs for these new commercials. The second song she wrote for the company was called "Country Sunshine". This time, West wrote the song especially for the company. Not before too long, the company released the song one of their Country commercials and the commercial became a big success. Everyone seemed to like the song so much that, Dottie decided to record the song and release it as a single.

In 1973, West released "Country Sunshine" to the Country Music and Pop Music charts. The song ultimately became one of West's biggest hits, and her career took off after this song was recorded. The song just missed topping the Country Music charts (reaching No. 2) and went to the Pop Top 50 (reaching No. 49). The song proved success for West in both careers. Because of the song's success in the commercial, West was given a Clio award for writing it in 1974. "Country Sunshine" became one of Dottie's biggest hits of all time. The song became West's signature song. After the success of the song, she has been nicknamed The Country Sunshine. "Country Sunshine" is also West's "theme song".

"Country Sunshine" is about a person who had been persuaded to leave his or her smalltown to go with someone else to the big city. However, he or she declines the offer because this likes living in the country, because they were raised on "country sunshine".

[edit] Cover Versions

  • Most recently, a cover version of the song by a karaoke company proved successful.
