Counthill School is a mixed gender secondary school for 11 - 16 year olds in the Moorside area of Oldham in Greater Manchester, England.
The school has approximately 1200 pupils on its roll. Opened in September 1951, it is reputedly the highest school above sea level in the country. It's motto is "Challenge, Achievement, Pride". The current headteacher is Mrs Margaret A Ryan, who took over from David J. Clifford. The deputy headteachers are Mr Stephen Curran, Miss Julie Rogers and Mr Lancaster. Mrs Pauline Sanders & Miss Margaret S Ryan are assistant headteacher. For years it has been one of the strongest schools in Oldham in terms of sport, particularly rugby. Most notably the rugby league player Paul Sculthorpe attended the school.
Although the school did require Special Measures in 2004 [1], on 23rd November 2006 the special measures tag was removed. See Page 8. [2]. GCSE exam results have now increased from 27% in 2004 to just over 50% passes at A-C in 2007. 2007 results not yet on DCSF website[3]
Counthill has put on shows in the past, the likes of Joseph, Gregory's Girl, Grease and Bugsy Malone. All credit to the music and drama departments.
Oldham Borough Council is reshaping secondary schooling under the UK government's Building Schools for the Future project. Counthill, along with four other schools (Breeze Hill, Kaskenmoor, Grange, South Chadderton) is earmarked for closure. [4]
