Title | Prince of Sweden, Duke of Uppland Count of Wisborg |
Parents | Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden and Princess Margaret of Connaught |
Sigvard Oscar Fredrik Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg (7 June 1907 – 4 February 2002), formerly known by his royal title as Prince Sigvard, Duke of Uppland, was the second son of King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden and his first wife, Princess Margaret of Connaught.
He married 3 times; on 8 March 1934 he married commoner Erica Maria Patzek (b. 12 July 1911) and because it was an unequal match for a Swedish Prince, whether or not having acquired consent for the marriage from the monarch, he lost his princely title and was excluded from the line of succession. Sigvard and Erika divorced on 14 Oct 1943 and only 12 days later he married another commoner, Sonja Robbert (b. 12 Oct 1909). They had a son, Michael Bernadotte 21 August 1944. Sigvard and Sonja were divorced on 6 June 1961. A month later, on 30 July 1961, he married Gullan Marie Lindberg (b. 15 July 1924), who then became Countess Marianne Bernadotte af Wisborg.
On July 2, 1951 he was created Count Bernadotte af Wisborg by Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg. In May 28, 1983 Sigvard announced to Tidningarnas Telegrambyrå, TT that he will title himself prince again.
Over the years he petitioned restoration of his princely title, but King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden never obliged, nor inclined to accept such a decision. Sigvard went to the European Court of Human Rights in an effort to restore his princely title. In 2004, after the death of Sigvard, the ECHR declared the application inadmissible.[1]
From 1994 to 2002, he was the oldest living great-grandchild of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, and having reached the age of 94, he was the longest lived of all her great-grandchildren.
