The Council Of Chiefs is a non-profit organization, that was created in honor of Chief Illiniwek at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007. It has been in existence since 1926, when the First Chief Illiniwek came out.^{[citation needed]}

The Council's Purpose is to protect and preserve the Chief Illiniwek tradition for all those who go to the University, and also those in the community.^{[citation needed]}

The initiator of the symbol has requested it back, which leads possibly to the opportunity for the Chief Illiniwek tradition to survive, even through the council of Chiefs.^{[citation needed]}
