[edit] History
Before Cougar Creek, the Lakewood School District had only 2 elementary schools that were very small and were split into a primary elementary (Lakewood Elementary, Kindergarten-Grade 2) and secondary elementary (English Crossing Elementary, Grade 3-Grade 5). In total, these two school only held about 600 students, 400 in English Crossing[3] and 200 in Lakewood Elementary.
The community was rapidly growing along with neighboring Smokey Point, which is also served by the school district, so the district put a proposition for voters to vote for a new elementary school. The voters voted yes and the designing and construction began in 2002. The school was completed in the Summer of 2003 and in Fall of 2003, the school opened.
[edit] Campus
The school's campus is a large campus, but only small amounts are open for students. One of the most private areas is the wetlands, which are partially fenced off to protect the area. Another protected area is the pond at the front of the campus.
The campus consits of the main school building where the school is taught, a large field for sports such as soccer, a Backyard Habitat (or outdoor lounge), two playgrounds (one for Kindergarten classes and another for other grades), a basketball court, pick-up/drop-off area, and a bus bay. The main school building is made up of 3 pods and other areas. There is an office, library, principal office, nurse's office, multipurpose room, computer lab, music room (that acts as a stage), restrooms, and classrooms.
[edit] Architecture
The school is one of the most unique schools in the school district. The school has irregular shapes for the roof and frequently uses strange and simple shapes to decorate the windows, rooms, and more. In each of the 3 pods, the ceiling is elimated to show the pipes and wires used to connect the school.
[edit] Curriculum
The school has had numerous additions to its curriculm including adding subjects in different school years. When the school opened, there were three already added subjects, reading, math, and writing. From 2004-2007, the science curriculum was added and improved along with social studies (2005-2006), and art (2005-2007). The current curriculum addition is health and fitness.[4]
