Template talk:COTWvoter

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This template is used to tag user talk pages of people who vote for the winning candidate on Collaboration of the week. It inserts its own header and should be added at the end of the talk page, like any normal comment.

To allow for future (weekly) updates of the template, the text of the template should be added by transclusion and not by reference thus:

{{subst:COTWvoter}}

which inserts the following text:

== COTW Project ==

You voted for [[{{subst:cotw1}}]], this week's Collaboration of the week. Please come and help it become a featured-standard article. -- ALoan (Talk) 14:25, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Unfortunately, any updating of the template will make user talk pages bearing the {{COTWvoter}} template also show the update, making it very confusing for the user. For example:

  • The COTW of Week #1 is chosen to be Really Cool Stub.
  • Someone comes along and reminds everyone else with the message {{COTWvoter}} ~~~~, forgetting the subst:.
  • The COTW of Week #2 becomes Even Better Stub.
  • The template is updated to meet the changes.
  • Suddenly, those users who voted for Really Cool Stub yet might not have voted for Even Better Stub would have the message change on their talk pages undesirably.
