[edit] Etymology

  • I was under the impression that wikipedia is not the place for etymology... (WP:WINAD) Dj stone 13:43, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Lots of Wikipedia articles have a bity about etymology of its subject's name. Anthony Appleyard 16:58, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
    • I thought my link to Wiktionary cotton was appropriate. Even if we keep an etymology section, I don't think it should be on the dab page... (WP:D#Dictionary_definitions) This page needs to be cleaned up anyway - I was going to work on it when I get a chance. Dj stone 19:57, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Edits to page March 29, 2008

The point of a disambiguation page is not to list every possible definition or use of a particular word in the English language; disambiguation pages are meant to assist a Wikipedia user in finding an existing page whose topic is (or could be) the actual word (or combination of words) used in their search query.

Please see Wikipedia:Disambiguation and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages) for more info.

Having said that, these are the edits I made to this page:

  • Removed etymology references and added Wiktionary template
  • Changed/added a few headings and reoganised some links
  • Removed piped link: "Cotton, the family of Hobbits". This topic does not have a page of it's own and I doubt that anyone searching this topic would simply use the word "cotton."
  • Removed red link Cotton (Pirates) since there is no page on this particular character, nor are they even mentioned on the Pirates of the Caribbean (film series) link provided
  • Removed link to Cotton Mather since I doubt anyone searching for this individual would simply use the word "cotton" as their search word. Nowhere is it indicated that this individual was known simply by his first name, like Madonna or Elvis...
    • I did however leave the link to Cotton Hill since this character is often referred to simply as "Cotton" by the other characters on the series (admittedly, I watch the show...)
  • Removed link to Coton, Staffordshire - A link to the Coton dab page is in the "See also" section and contains a link to this topic
  • Changed red link James Cotton (musician) to existing page title, simply James Cotton. Also made sure there weren't any pages redirecting to James Cotton (musician).
  • I was unable to find info from reliable sources in order to make stub pages for Émile Cotton, Aimé Auguste Cotton, or Cotton, Suffolk. I did however decide to leave these red-links on this dab page since they have potential for being expanded upon: Émile and Aimé Auguste's contributions do already have pages and there are already 4 other pages w/ redirects to Cotton, Suffolk.

Certainly if anyone disagrees with anything I've removed they can feel free to place them back on this page. Marchije (talk) 00:17, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
