[edit] Past History of Coto de Caza was a 5 thousand Acer Hunt and Equestrian Club.

Hi, I worked as a Club Membership Tour Ranger at Coto de Caza from 1970 - 1972. The club was owned by a corporation called the MACO Corp. The club had 3 thousand acers for Equestrian use and the Southern end was 2 thousand acers for hunting. In the Equestrian side the had an Equestrian Lounge next to one of the worlds finest horse paddocks and arena. John Wayne and his friends very regulars here. The top horse at the club was Bo Mac. Just over the hill to the east was a fabulous club house. The club house had the best to offer every member. The club house had a fine dinning room, two bowling lanes, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, game room for the kids and even a built in Day Care for members with smaller children. In the Hunting side of the club they had a Pigeon Shoot, Trap and Skeet Shoot, a Quail Shoot Trail, Duck Shoot with a pond and a fine field for hunting Phezent. They filmed the Raquel Welch Special at the club. I was in the main club house having lunch one day and there were no tables available. I had one and the Duke was looking for a place to sit ti eat his lunch. I flagged him over to share my table. He joined me for lunch. It was wonderful to sit next to him and have lunch together. We talked briefly about the club and how much he did enjoy the peace and quiet of it. I was from Malibu and lived around movie and T.V. Stars most of my life. I knew to treat this man as a human being and not go Ga Ga and stupid. He was a delightful gentleman to sit with talk to. He later asked me when I was finished, if I would go outside and help his photographer get pictures of his Grandson on a swing. Since I was in my Ranger uniform with my Cowboy Hat. I had a good time with is Grandson on the rope swing. This was back in 1971. In the summer of 1972 I was showing lots for sale on the hill between the Equestrian Lodge and the Big Club House. I met many more famous people. They too were members and were now looking to buy property to build homes at the club. Later, Coto de Caza purchased the STAR RANCH just over the hill to the east of the Clubs private air strip for planes. The Star ranch was covered in Old Oak trees and had a fantastic old home under them. I went a drive threw to evaluate the area for tours and found many, many dead cattle around the home. Vultures were everywhere around the dead bodies. I do not know who did this. But to me, it just seemed that something was wrong here. By 1972 Coto de Caza had expanded by almost three times as much property as it had in 1970. The club was located at the end of Trabuco Canyon Oaks at the base of Saddleback Mountain. I loved working there being part of something very special. Now I understand it has become a Gated Golf Community. What ever happened to the old club?
