Cotorreando

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cotorreando was a daily Spanish language gossip television show that ran by the U.S. Spanish network, Telemundo from 2000 to 2007 .

Cotorreando was established to be in direct competition with Univision's El Gordo y la Flaca, which had been in production since 1998. It was produced in Miami, Florida. At first shown live, at 3pm EST (and shown recorded at the same time on the West coast), the show's producers decided to broadcast it at 12pm live on the East coast and recorded on the West coast, where it would also be shown at 12pm. The change in time slot was because show producers thought that, by getting their daily dose of gossip at an earlier time, television viewers would be disinterested in watching their rival show.

The show has shed light on Hispanic show business scandals, and while many entertainers do not oppose the show (many have actually visited the set), others have objected to being interviewed on camera for Cotorreando. Actress Salma Hayek, for example, reacted by answering no! when she was asked by a reporter to send the Cotorreando staff on camera greetings.

One of the original hosts of the show, Graciela Mori, left the show after allegedly the animosity between her and Mauricio Zeillic. During this time, another anchor was added, Martha Figueroa who left as soon as she got hired. After Graciela left, the show was conducted by Esteban Arce, Luisa Fernanda and Mauricio Zeilic but as of late 2006 Esteban left. Luisa Fernanda and Mauricio Zeilic anchored the show thereafter until, an on air exchange between the two, happened. According to sources, Luisa Fernanda used the word "cherna" which until then was a little usend and colloquially used word. This is supposed to mean "homosexual." Hostess Luisa Fernanda said on air, that her fellow co-host, Mauricio had the support of the "chernas de Hialeah". This loosely translates into the "homosexuals of Hialeah".

Telemundo Network used this exchange as a pretext to fire the hostess claiming to be distraught about the use of the word. According to the official line, the network received "many calls, complaining of her remarks", and that they would not tolerate someone using this epiteph on air. Mauricio Zeillic continued to host the show until its' last episode.

Friday September 28, Telemundo announced that it was cancelling Cotorreando and the final episode of Cotorreando aired that day. Telemundo executives decided to use the time slot for reruns of recent Novelas. The cancellation of the show leaves a large gap in Telemundo's schedule for exposure of Latin pop and rock music as well as interviews and previews of it's upcoming novelas.

Mauricio Zeillic was fired and escorted out of the building after throwing a hissy fit in the corporate offices.

The week of October 1st, 2007 Telemundo is airing an old soap opera "La mujer en el espejo" from 2004-05 in Cotorreando's former time slot.
