Cotillion Handicap

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The F. Eugene Dixon, Jr. Cotillion Breeders Cup Handicap is a race for thoroughbred race horses run at Philadelphia Park Racetrack on the fourth Saturday in September (as of 2007) as a prelude to the annual Breeders Cup World Thoroughbred Championships. Prior to this change in date, it was usually held in October, a week or two before the Breeders' Cup; the new date will attempt to draw a stronger field. The race is open to filles and mares, age three and up, willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles (eight and a half furlongs) on the dirt. The Grade II event carries a purse of $500,000, and was given its current name following the death of Fitz Eugene Dixon, Jr. of the Widener fortune in 2006.

This race, which was inaugurated in 1969 at Liberty Bell Park in Northeast Philadelphia before thoroughbred racing moved to the then-Keystone Park in nearby Bensalem in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, has produced five Eclipse Award winners. One of them is the multiple winner Susan's Girl who won this race in 1972.
