[edit] A note from Costa Botes:

The entry above is not incorrect in some details

I both co-wrote and co-directed Forgotten Silver with Peter Jackson. I instigated the project, and developed most of the screenplay.

To say I have not made a successful film since is somewhat moot. Even Forgotten Silver has yet to make a significant profit.

I believe I brought a good deal more to the behind the scenes effort on Lord of the Rings than my friendship with Jackson! Sloppy information is one thing, but sites like this ought to take more care not to impugn peoples professional reputation.

For the record:

I produced and directed a great deal of behind the scenes footage documenting the making of Lord of the rings throughout the production of the trilogy. Of course I was authorised to do this by the studio. They funded all the shooting. To suggest otherwise is nonsense. My footage has been used in a myriad of ways by the studio.

We did have an agreement that I would produce a major documentary in my own right. Unfortunately, circumstances changed after New Line brought in another production company to create the Extended Edition DVDs. That left my own documentary projects in limbo for a long time. This has now happily been resolved by the release of my work - three feature length documentaries (largely but not entirely intact, as I delivered them) - in new DVD editions. There will be one major documentary for each of the trilogy films, featuring a great deal of footage not previously seen. These works are completely different in style, intent, and execution from anything in the Extended Editions.

The presentation is simple, but the content is very rich indeed. All three of the docs are packed with detail. These should provide the definitive account of how Jackson's historic adaptation was made.
